  • Peaceful rural site with stunning mountain views
  • Outdoor swimming pool
  • In an area with some of the lowest rainfall in Europe
Rain, rain, go to Spain? Er no: Almeria's Oro Verde Camping is in a sunny Spanish region that sees the least rain anywhere in the land and has an excellently arid climate even in winter… And a billy bonus: it's in an area that sees the most sunshine in Europe too. The campsite is in a peaceful as well as a warm place, set in an olive grove about six and a half kilometres from the little town of Tabernas (yes, cowboy, the one where the Westerns are shot). Although it's rural, access to the site is level and simple from the N340. Settle down by the pool here to bask in quiet, or use Oro Verde as a base to get to the wildlife and birdwatching of the nearby Los Filabros and Alhamillas mountain ranges and the nature reserves all around. The coast and the smashing old city of Almeria are both within about 25 kilometres away. Amenities on site include a heated facilities block, washing machine and laundry facilities. A communal barbecue area is to hand for grilling up dinner.

Local attractions

This be spaghetti Western land: Almeria's status as the most arid region in Europe and the setting of the continent's only desert means it's been a mecca for film directors seeking wide open Wild West style landscapes. Oro Verde's local town of Tabernas edges the Tabernas Desert where many a Western was shot; if this is your filmy thing, get along to the three film sets of Fort Bravo, Western Leone and Mini Hollywood to find out more among their live entertainment, cactus gardens, zoo and waterpark. Away from celluloid, hiking and cycling the desert landscape are other popular pursuits around here (but do bring warm clothes as it can get chilly as evening falls), along with wildlife watching in the several nature reserves surrounding the campsite, and forays to the coast and the clean quiet beaches of Retamar. The Cabo de Gata Nationsl Park, home to great flocks of flamingoes and other wading birds, is a little further along the coast. Prefer to take things up a gear or two? An international racing circuit open all year round is just down the road from the site.
