  • Family-run site in the Sierra de María-Los Vélez Natural Park
  • A 10-minute drive from María and two hours to Almeria and the coast
  • Pool with large solarium and high season activities and entertaiment
You're well up in the mountains when you bag your berth at Camping Sierra de María. Set (hugely) scenically on the north-western chunk of the Sierra de María-Los Vélez Natural Park, this small and family-run site sits 1,200 metres above sea level to give splendid mountain views in all directions. Consume at their best from the restaurant which has spectacular vistas over the Sierra de Maria... all the while making your steady way through the budget-friendly set menu. Your scenic mountainous base is in the Almeria province, in a lushly remote spot for lengthy mountain adventures but under 10 minutes' drive from the Andalucian village of María. The closest big city is Murcia, an hour and a half to the east; to the west, Granada is two hours away and Málaga just over three. Almeria city and the Mediterranean coast are two hours' drive south. Entertainment and activities are held on site during high season. Or you could settle down by the pool instead for a restful siesta at the solarium – the views from here are simply splendid too.

Local attractions

This is a tiptop setting for hiking, climbing and mountain biking: ask the friendly team for top tips on the best routes (including two within a kilometre) or set off with a picnic to find your own secret spots. Covering over 22,500 hectares, the Sierra de María-Los Vélez Natural Park is a top spot for outdoor adventures of all sorts, as well as nature spotting and birdwatching: the park is a Special Protection Area for birds and has around 100 species including 17 sorts of birds of prey. It's a land of ancient sites too, inhabited by humans since prehistoric times and with many an archaeological site to see including the cave paintings of Cueva de los Letreros or Cave of the Signboards 20 minutes' drive away, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For a cooling and peaceful afternoon, drive 15 minutes to the Jardín Botánico Umbría de la Virgen just outside María, on the northern slopes of the Maria range.
