Slope along to Camping Alpujarra if you want a Spanish mountain break filled with skiing, mountain biking and heady hiking, as it's right at the foot of Puerto de la Ragua, the high (and highly scenic) mountain pass in Andalusia's Sierra Nevada and the Sierra Nevada National Park. The site is also only a kilometre from Laroles, the small village between the Bayárcal and La Ragua rivers and surrounded by handsome chestnut groves. The other Nevada villages – Mairena, Picena and Júbar – are all easy to get to from here. In between days out fully investigating all the above, take your pick from a few restful options back on site: long dips in the solar-heated pool; long lies on the roomy terrace near it, or long meals at the site bar-restaurant, which serves Mozarabic and Alpujarran regional dishes along with international options. (Or just slope along to the bar to sample the free tapas along with a local beer or wine.) Camping Alpujarras also has a laundry room, washing-up facilities and toilet/shower blocks with free hot water.

Route directions

From Levante, Valencia, Alicante or Murcia: Take Autovia del Mediterraneo towards Puerto Lumbreras. From Puerto Lumbreras, take A92N and continue towards Guadix (Baza-Granada). In Guadix follow the directions to Almería. After Almería follow the directions for Puerto de la Ragua - La Calohorra and continue towards Laroles. Once in Laroles, the campsite will be signposted. From Almería: Take A92 direction to Puerto de la Ragua - La Calohorra and continue towards Laroles. Once in Laroles, the campsite will be signposted. From Madrid and Jaén: On the 323, take the exit signposted La Venta de la Nava and continue on the A340. From A340, take A92 towards Almería. Follow directions to La Calahorra-Puerto de la Ragua and continue to Laroles. Once in Laroles, the campsite will be signposted.

Local attractions

Camping Alpujarras is in the Sierra Nevada National Park between the provinces of Granada and Almeria and the ski resort of Puerto de la Ragua. Get into the Andalusian outdoors around here whatever the season, for hiking, mountain biking, orienteering and horse-riding in the summer, and dog sledding, skiing and snowboarding in the cooler months. The site is in the Sierra Nevada National Park, a place of diverse landscapes from valleys to peaks to rivers and mountain lakes, and a haven for hikers as well as wildlife watchers: species to see here include the Spanish ibex, wild boars, pine martens and badgers, and, soaring overhead, golden and Bonelli's eagles, kestrels and little owls. Take the camera to the Puerto de la Ragua straight up from the campsite, or to the peaks of the Marquesado del Zenete or the Morron del Hornillo mountains. Chullo, the highest peak in Almeria at 2,610 metres, has topping views over the mountainous landscape and to Spain's highest mountain Mulhacén.
