  • Beachfront site in Laredo, less than an hour from Bilbao and Santander
  • A 15-minute walk from a resort centre for horse riding and watersports
  • Facilities for cyclists and easy access to bike routes
Folk seeking a Spanish seaside stay or a stopover while meandering along the coast between Bilbao and Santander, take a peek at this place. Camping Playa El Regatón is a splendid spot in lovely Laredo, slap bang between the two cities and less than an hour’s drive from each. It’s not just about the proximity to urban wanderings here though – this Cantabria site is also right on the beachfront, giving guests excellently easy access to a stretch of sand and the calm waters of the Treto river. A 15-minute walk away is the centre of the resort, with another gorgeous golden beach, watersports and riding centres, and heaps of restaurants and shops. Life on site is pretty chilled too… Mature trees all around provide pitches with a bit of shade and privacy, and there are plenty of useful facilities – a playground, table tennis and kids’ club should keep the tiddlers happy, while gadget addicts will be chuffed to hear that the wifi service stretches across much of the site. Eats are easily sorted too at the on-site café, or by heading to the barbecue area with bits from the mini market. This is a particularly fab choice for those of you travelling on two wheels – stop off here to be close to lots of cycle routes as well as being able to use the site’s handy bike-friendly facilities, including a safe storage area, a workshop for running repairs and a launderette to freshen your pedalling togs.

Local attractions

Laredo’s well known in Spain for its gorgeous beach, a five-kilometre sheltered sandy swathe with a backdrop of wooded hills. Take your pick from relaxing times sunbathing and swimming or getting active by galloping along the beach on horseback, taking surfing or paddleboarding lessons or suiting up for a scuba dive. Away from the main beach, it’s 20 minutes' drive to the Santoña, Victoria and Joyel Marshes Natural Park to go in search of migrating birds. Or you could potter in the Puebla Vieja, Laredo’s medieval quarter, to see houses dating back to the 16th century. Day trips to Bilbao and Santander are highly recommended from here too, of course – don’t miss the Palacio de La Magdalena in Santander, or the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Location is wonderful in the estuary with mountains in the background and lovely beach walks. Nice little bar and cafe and also small shop. Showers and loos well though out and very clean.

Disliked: Pitches very close together but under lovely shade of the trees and although the site was full it was not noisy.

Liked: loved the friendly welcome and helpful staff. Secure place to keep our bikes overnight and to charge them. Loved the tables and sinks everywhere that allowed us to cook and enjoy our meal even with just a tiny tent. Love the clean showers and toilets, and the dryers for clothes. Location was beautiful near a nature reserve with gorgeous sunsets. Lots of dogs on site which meant mostly friendly sociable campers to interact with. Great cafe and shop. Solar charger for phone. All round great place and will definitely return if passing through.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Great location within easy cycling distance of the busy town. Such friendly people - Sat nav took us to sandy track, which we didn’t want to follow. A local stopped his van and asked if he could help. This set the tone for this place and its people. Using it as a stopover for ferry - it is worth a longer stay in its own right. Finally, the site restaurant is the best value food of our whole trip, and tasty with great service. What lovely people the Spanish are!

Disliked: Beach not great, no pool - but options within easy distance

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: We loved this campsite - clean loos and showers, beautiful location by the waters edge, with cafe and shop on site, useful tables and ainks neara pitches for cooking. Lots of deying facilities available. Everyone here was very friendly, staff and guests. They stored our bikes in a lock up overnight with a place to charge our batteries. Loved our stay and looking forward to going back again on our way home

Disliked: No soap in the ladies toilets
