  • Quiet site surrounded by forests and mountains
  • A short drive from Berga and the shrine of Queralt
  • Two pools, bar, restaurant and playground
Procure yourself an appropriate notebook, for you'll be writing lengthy lists of must-sees with a stay at Camping Font Freda. You might care to scribble schedules for getting out into the surrounding forests or the peaks of the Pre-Pyrenees first, for example, around the local walking paths or tiptop foraging spots for local fare (here there be mushrooms). The festivals and restaurants of Berga are less than 10 minutes away, Barcelona is an hour and a half's drive, and hundreds of kilometres of hiking trails cross the nearby Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park: you may possibly need two notebooks. Rock climbing, skiing, paragliding and mountain biking can all be added to your ever-expanding list depending on how adventurous you're feeling, or you could fish for trout and barbel in one of the man local designated rivers. Or take things most easily indeed with a pampering soak in Berga's wellness resort, 15 minutes from the site... Or you could, even more easily, stay around these peaceful and green grounds instead: this mountain and forest site is in splendid setting for nature spotting and has stacks of space for site-based strolls (and, maybe, snoozing gently under the shade of a tall tree?). As a family site, Font Freda's modern facilities are set up to appeal to all: there's an outdoor pool each for the grownups and the sprogs; a playground for teeny types to swing around at; a football pitch for (gently) competitive family tournaments, and a lively July and August entertainment programme for all ages. The site also has a well-stocked supermarket and a bar and restaurant serving traditional food. The well-kept amenities include toilet and shower blocks with heating and free hot water, and a laundry room with washing machines and dryers.

Local attractions

This mountainous area is in splendid setting for trekking, whether your tastes are for following the local paths or striking out on your own for forest, mountain and foraging walks. If you're foraging, local town Berga is a famed centre for Catalonia's plump red pine mushrooms, so look out for them on the forest floor while on your eagle-eyed travels. The restaurants in and around the town should have many a local mushroom dish available in autumn if you'd prefer to have your fungi served safely to your table. The Camping Font Freda team can steer you towards local rock climbing, quad biking, paragliding and mountain biking for more adrenalised days, or to the local equestrian centre for mountain and forest hacks. Watersports and serene surrounds are at La Baells reservoir, less than 20 minutes away. Spectacular scenery of the surrounding mountains, villages and valleys are all around from the shrine of Queralt, a highly scenic spot nicknamed Catalonia's balcony for the splendour of its views. Hike up to it (with camera) from Berga, or take the short drive up and wander the nearby paths from here. Short tracks and long-distance trails start from the shrine, such as the Camí dels Bons Homes or Way of Good Men, running scenically for a couple of hundred kilometres from here to the Château de Montségur, over the border in south-west France.
