How’s this for a super spot for your hiking hols? Small and family run Camping Vilademager, a couple of kilometres from medieval La Llacuna, is a peaceful spot in a protected natural area with stunning mountain scenery all around. If you’re the type that’s happiest in hiking boots you’ll be in your element here – several routes are ready to be tramped just outside the site and the GR 172 passes close by as it wends its 189-kilometre way around Catalonia. Waterfalls, caves and castles are all nearby to add variety to your walks, and the mighty monastery of Montserrat is just under an hour’s drive away. Back at base, there’s plenty of space and shade for a post-hike siesta, and a small outdoor pool to plunge into if you’re in more immediate need of a cool dip. A small snack bar and shop provide the eats and it’s also possible to order bread to be delivered daily. If it’s an alfresco feast kind of day, you’ll be chuffed to see the large barbecue area awaiting your offerings; pick them up at the butcher or supermarket in the village (five minutes’ drive or half an hour’s stroll). There are plenty of bakeries and bars hiding behind those old stone walls too.

Local attractions

Ready to give your boots a bit of gentle exercise? Have a word with the folks on site and they’ll point you towards marked-out circular trails that you can pick up easily from the site. Something a bit more challenging? See how far you can get along the GR 172 long-distance trail (do turn around at some point though or you’ll end up in Sitges and facing a 14-hour hike back). For some of the best mountain views in the area head up to Montserrat (45 minutes’ drive), where a cable car will whisk you up to 1,236 metres to peruse the monastery’s impressive art collection (including works by Dalí, El Greco and Monet) before you head up a further 300 metres in a funicular for hiking trails around the summit and its deserted hermitages. Not quite as lofty but still requiring a bit of a head for heights are the treetop trails and ziplines for kids and grownups at Les Deus Aventura (half an hour’s drive). The folk here can sort out canyoning or climbing trips for those who’d like to get close up to the rocks too.
