  • Fishing village setting in the Cap de Creus Natural Park

  • Pool, terrace, playground and bar-restaurant
'Everything you need to enjoy a holiday with your family and friends on the Costa Brava', says the team of Càmping Port De La Selva about their well-set site: trot along for a spell to see if you agree. It's mighty well set here indeed, a couple of kilometres from the viewsome village and old fishing settlement of El Port de la Selva on the northern coast of the Cap de Creus. This eastern chunk of Catalonia has spectacular scenery, stunning coastline, Pyrenees foothills… and arty history galore, as it's home to Cadaqués (a scenic holiday spot for Dali and Picasso, among many others) as well as to Figueres, Dali's birthplace. Kids not at all interested in all that? The Cap de Creus is natural park territory too, for weeks' worth of wildlife watching, and kids of any inclination will clamour to spend weeks more on the local beaches. There's a whole heap of stuff for all ages to get stuck into on site, whether your tastes tend towards dips in the pool or casting a supervisory eye over water-based offspring from the shaded comfort – and clinking cocktails – of the bar terrace. Small sorts also have a playground, table football and a pool to keep them busy, and space aplenty to rush about around under the shade of the site trees. The restaurant is particularly fine (even for picky eaters, fingers crossed), as it serves a good range of local cuisine, often using produce sourced straight from the site's own veg garden.

Route directions

On the AP-7 from Barcelona or France take the exit towards Figueres. Merge onto the N-260 and take the exit to Llançà. At the roundabout, take the second exit and follow signs to Port de la Selva. Once in Port de la Selva continue towards Cadaqués; the site is a kilometre past the exit of the village.

Local attractions

Watersports, coastal hikes… or simply setting off on the trail of local wine to accompany local cuisine… the region surrounding the site has the lot. The medieval village of El Port de La Selva is a pretty place for a potter about, particularly around its castle and the Sant Pere de Rodes monastery; head east of here for hiking trails to Cap de Creus. But the most famed settlement on this coast is most definitely Cadaqués (30 minutes' drive), a fave holiday spot of Picasso, Dali and enough other artists to keep easel manufacturers occupied for aeons: go, see, agree… and possibly paint too. Inland, an even more famed arty spot is Figueres (40 minutes) where Dali was born, and now home to the Dalí Theatre and Museum. The 18th-century Sant Ferran Castle is in Figueres too, along with the most intriguing (to geekily tasteful types) Technical Museum of the Empordà, home to hundreds of antique typewriters.
