  • Roomy, shaded and grassy site among an oak wood near Sarria's centre
  • A short stroll from the St James’s Way pilgrimage route
  • Modern restaurant and bar with two terraces to relax around
After a hard day’s hiking or riding along the St James’s Way trail, you’ll be glad to hole up here... Camping Vila de Sarria’s pitches are shaded, spacious, open and set among an oak forest... there’s a swish café-bar and restaurant on site too. In Spain’s Lugo province, 20 minutes’ walk from the banks of the Sarria river and five minutes’ drive from Sarria’s town centre, this is a top spot for hikers on the St James’s Way pilgrimage route to rest their weary bods. The well-worn pilgrims’ path passes through nearby Sarria, and continues on to the final destination of Santiago de Compostela (usually reached in about seven days from Sarria). The route from here goes via shaded oak woods and quiet country roads, through comely villages like Barbadelo and Ferreiros, and, around six hours' hike away, to the café terraces lining the main square of the next rest stop, pretty Portomarin. The fodder available at the site’s café-bar and restaurant will be much welcomed by tired pilgrims too: settle back in the evening for food and a few tipples on the wide open restaurant terrace, or pick up a light bite (think sandwiches, pizzas and ice cream) or a beer at the café-bar, around its airy interior or at one of its two scenic terraces. The site is roomy and has lots of natural shade from oak trees, as well as plenty of grassy space to stretch out around, and loads of room for littlies to let off steam.

Electric optional forest floor touring caravan pitch

Liked: Very friendly, polite owners, always wanting to please. Good, smart bar and restaurant. Toilets and showers very clean.

Disliked: The pitches are all surrounded by oak trees so can be very shaded. Great in hot weather, but not so good in dull, wet weather

Local attractions

Perhaps the biggest draw for Sarria is that it lies right on the St James’s Way pilgrimage route, providing amblers somewhere highly pleasant to plonk themselves overnight before heading on to Portomarin, 22 kilometres away. For outdoorsy days, head to the O Chanto recreational site on the banks of the Sarria river; here leisure seekers can get stuck into fishing at several reserves along the water’s course, as well as hunting, more hiking or horse riding. Also here is a picnic area and an outdoor public pool. Foodies will be happy around Sarria too: around the town’s eateries try local specialities like cocido, a traditional stew made primarily of pork, octopus, pastry and game, plus dishes centred around partridge, boar and hare. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, round your dins off with a blood crepe or milk and egg freixos with cream or honey.
