  • Family-run riverside site near Espinal in the Navarre Pyrenees
  • Half an hour from hiking trails in the Irati forest
  • Swimming pool, natural pool, restaurant, bar and miniature golf
Forest walks, natural swimming and plenty of fun things to keep the kids occupied while you enjoy a spot of downtime – if this sounds like your kind of holiday wishlist you’d be well advised to hurry on over to Camping Urrobi, a family-run place just outside the little village of Espinal in the Navarre Pyrenees. Nature surrounds you wherever you peer around here: the walking trails, wildlife and rural views of the Irati forest are about half an hour’s drive away and the Sorogain valley’s waterfalls and megalithic dolmen can be reached with 20 minutes or so in the car. A little closer to home, the Urrobi river flows past the site, opening up a splendid natural swimming area in summer along with enticingly dappled spots in which to set up for an afternoon of trout fishing. River-related pursuits aside, there’s plenty of other bits and bobs to keep you entertained on site: bat balls around at the tennis court or table tennis, putt your way to victory on the miniature golf course or gather a team of chums for games of basketball or football. And after all that, perhaps don your cozzie again for a second swim – in the outdoor pool this time (summer season only). Suppertime sausage sizzles can be held on the communal barbecues, with all the essential ingredients available from the site’s mini market or the grocery store 10 minutes’ walk away. Should your holiday wishlist also feature someone else to take over the cooking, that’s no problem – amble on over to the restaurant to select from a menu packed with local faves such as fresh seafood, duck and Spanish cheeses. Euro-conscious guests will be particularly chuffed to see the wallet-friendly set menus offered up on weekday evenings, and parentals will note the handy location of the playground next to the restaurant terrace. Amenities on site include plenty of drinking water taps, a launderette and two well-kept toilet blocks with free hot showers.

Local attractions

You’d be well advised to bring some sturdy shoes with you as you’ll most likely be wanting to hit lots of the walking trails that cross this gorgeously green and pleasant area. Start by having a look around locally, following one of the five circular trails that start from just outside the site; have a chat with staff to help you select the best one for you. Later on, set your sights a little further afield and head to the Irati forest, half an hour’s drive from the site. Many kilometres of trails for walkers and cyclists run through the second largest beech and fir forest in Europe. If your feet are complaining, there’s a riding centre just under an hour away that can fix you up with rides in and around the Foz de Arbayún canyon. Over in the Sorogain valley, 20 minutes’ drive from the site, you can follow paths that take you past some ancient dolmen and riverside routes that lead to cooling waterfalls. An hour’s walk or 10-minute drive takes you to Roncesvalles to visit the monastery that’s been a stop on the Camino de Santiago for many centuries. If you fancy a mini city break, it’s just under an hour’s drive to Pamplona, where you can visit the cathedral, fortress and old city walls before wandering the streets to seek out the best plates of pintxos (the local answer to tapas and a fab way to sample lots of tasty treats).
