  • Spectacular setting near Les Haudères, deep in the Swiss Alps
  • In the shade of centuries-old larch trees
  • Restaurant serving mountain recipes of meat, cheese and wine
'Stunning', 'amazing', 'wonderful', 'super'… would you like to add to the chorus of gratified guests of Camping Molignon in the Swiss Alps? Course you would: just clap eyes for a sec on those pics to see why. Back? Booked? Here's what you can expect when you arrive: a spectacularly scenic site right in the midst of the mountains, in the shade of centuries-old larch trees, among long lengths of hiking and biking paths, and with a friendly team ready to assist you in having a splendid Swiss hol – you did book for at least a couple of weeks…? Camping Molignon is in the Valais, the Swiss canton made up of mountains and valleys, glaciers and vineyards, spanning from the Rhône valley along to Lake Geneva. Its local village Les Haudères, in the municipality of Evolène, is a whopping 1,450 metres above sea level and is surrounded by peaks of up to 4,000 metres (you may not be even a teeny bit surprised then to hear that Les Haudères is a tiptop starting point for mountain hikes and clambers). One of the (several) highlights of Camping Molignon is its restaurant, set among the mountains and with a hefty menu of local dishes: expect succulent local meats, slabs of Swiss cheese and a good amount of excellent wine. To while away the time in between sessions sampling all these, the site has a heated pool, with a retractable roof so you can swim under the sun or still have dips on rainy days. Other facilities include table tennis, a playground and wifi.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: This campsite is in a wonderful location with incredible views of the swiss alps! The site itself is large with loads of space for each tent/camper. The land was flat so easy to camp on with loads of great hiking routes to choose from. The host was friendly and the facilities were clean and plentiful. This site also had a restaurant however we had chosen to eat at the restaurants in the local town. Such a peaceful place to camp.

Disliked: This campsite was more expensive than others we have stayed at but this is reflected across Switzerland.

Local attractions

Camping Molignon's Valais and Les Haudères setting is in a stunning part of the Swiss Alps, within easy reach of heady activities like mountaineering, skiing and paragliding, or gentler pursuits like walking, golfing and ice skating. Les Haudères is a popular starting point for mountain climbing, along its surrounding glacial peaks of up to 4,000 metres. On somewhat firmer ground, you can also glide gracefully (or not) on the Les Haudères natural ice skating rink: buy tickets at the Evolène regional tourist office or in the sports shops in town. If you'd like to chase a bit of culture while you're here, take a trip to Martigny (about 45 minutes' drive west) and set on roads joining Switzerland, Italy and France. Its ancient and cultural sights include a Roman amphitheatre and La Bâtiaz Castle (with toilets designed by the same architect as Harlech Castle in Wales, should you care to share this factoid with the kids). The three museums in town, including the famed Fondation Pierre Gianadda, should be stopped off at for some time too.
