Well, here’s a place with a bit of history – the Gurevich family has been hosting guests at Cherry Hill Park in College Park, 15 miles from Washington, DC, since way back in 1921. Admittedly, much has changed over the past century since those first guests bedded down behind the general store in what was then a poultry farm, but traditional family values and customer service are still at the fore five generations later. Quite what the early campers would have made of the resort’s smart range of facilities one can only imagine; even by 21st-century standards, this place has a lot going on. The outdoor water park has two solar-heated pools and a kids’ splash park, and there are two playgrounds, an arcade games area, a gym and a basketball court to keep active sorts amused. Those seeking a little more downtime can sidle off to the fishing lake (stocked with largemouth bass and bluegill), take a quiet stroll on the walking trail or relax in the hot tub or sauna. Eats are easily sorted at the well-stocked shop or the on-site café; just make sure you’re done by sundown so you can grab some popcorn and settle down for the open-air movie (a nightly fixture throughout the summer months). Outings to downtown Washington, DC are a must, of course (this is the closest cabin rental park to the city centre, after all) so take your pick from the list of guided tours that pick up from the park, or go your own way by trotting off to the bus stop just outside.

Local attractions

With downtown Washington, DC only about half an hour away, you should surely plan to spend several days poking around in the city. Start with a trip to the National Mall – not a shopping mall (sorry, spendy types) but a two-mile stretch that’s home to heaps of the famed sights you’ve seen on TV, including the White House, US Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial and a whole load more. Follow that up with some fab free visits to the Smithsonian Institution’s various galleries, museums and zoo, a walk through the cobbled streets of Georgetown, a visit to the huge Gothic-style Washington National Cathedral, a canoe paddle on the Potomac… Change of scenery? Eat crab cakes and take a cruise on Chesapeake Bay from Baltimore (half an hour’s drive), stroll through the historic streets of Annapolis (40 minutes) or get along to Gettysburg (an hour and a half) to see where Abraham Lincoln gave the speech that went down in history.
