  • Quiet Arizona park just off Highway 60, 15 minutes from Salome
  • Views of the Sonoran Desert; 25 minutes' drive from Quartzsite
  • Fitness suite, bar and friendly clubhouse with music and events
Desert dreams are definitely on the cards for travellers taking a detour off Highway 60 for a stay at 3 Dreamers RV Park, an Arizona park 15 minutes’ drive west of Salome. Cacti, palms and bighorn sheep all feature in the vistas that can be seen from here, confirming that you are indeed bedding down in the spectacular Sonoran Desert. This isn’t one of those completely flat expanses of sand, however – rocky peaks feature in the backdrop too, hinting at some of the hikes that can be had in the nearby Harquahala Mountains Wilderness. Walks, lake swims, boating and fishing days can all feature on the schedule here – if that little lot hasn’t given you quite enough exercise, there’s a fitness suite back at the park where you can burn off a few extra calories. Such behaviour means you’ve then earned yourself a beer or two in the bar, or can get stuck in at one of the potluck suppers held frequently in the clubhouse. And if your desert adventures have left you completely beat? Pull up a chair in the TV room or aim for the games room instead. Dreams are all well and good, of course, but so are everyday amenities – and those are in plentiful supply at this park, including a laundry room, free wifi and a bathroom block with hot showers. If it’s not potluck night (perhaps it’s karaoke night instead…) you may like to serve up your spread on the park’s picnic tables.

Local attractions

The natural landscape around here is pretty spectacular, so it’s recommended that you get out and about for tours of the Sonoran Desert, uphill climbs in the Harquahala Mountains (45 minutes’ drive) or trips to Alamo Lake State Park (an hour) for swims, boating and some excellent bass fishing. It may look a tad dry and dusty around these parts, but this area actually supports a surprising amount of life – you just need to know where to seek it out. Kofa National Wildlife Refuge (half an hour), Cibola National Wildlife Refuge (an hour) and Bill Williams River National Wildlife Refuge (an hour and a half) are the places to head if you’ve got binoculars primed for birdwatching. The rocky landscape isn’t just pretty to look at, it’s also abundant in all sorts of gems and minerals. The place to head for all that is Quartzsite (25 minutes), home to a huge annual gem show and the place to find fossils and other buried treasure. Sometimes the mining doesn’t go quite to plan, and you can see the aftermath of such a thing at the ghost town of Swansea (an hour and 15 minutes).
