Drive deep into a scenic, creekside and outdoorsy Utah holiday at Canyonlands RV Resort & Campground, on the banks of Pack Creek a few minutes' drive from Moab. This is spectacular land for outdoor pursuits: between the Arches and Canyonlands national parks, near the Colorado River, and in a land of canyoning, BASE jumping, highlining, rafting and hiking. Moab's also a well-known base for mountain bikers with its sizeable network of nearby trails (including the famed Slickrock Trail; if you're an experienced mountain biker, this one should be not just on your USA but on your global itinerary). If your tastes tend towards the less hectic, the Moab area is also renowned for motorbiking, ATV riding and off-road driving, with trails suitable for those new to the art as well as those who expertly wield the wheels. Or you could stride off into the surroundings with your camera instead, as these stunning surroundings have long been used as the backdrop for films including Westerns by John Ford, or just decide to spend your time ambling around the nearby wineries... And after long days getting stuck into all that? Canyonlands is just off Highway 191 for ease of access, with shops and restaurants plentiful along the main road. There's a well-equipped shop on site too, to pick up bits for meals or for picnics at the resort picnic area. If you hanker for a peaceful day or two in among all the outdoor and active days (likely), swim sedately in the Canyonlands pool before having a bask on the accompanying loungers among a backdrop of Utah's red landscape. There's free wifi and a library too; as night falls, amble over to the firepit area to swap adventuring tales with fellow guests. The resort also has a playground and a dog run.

Local attractions

Mighty Moab is famed throughout the States as an outdoor adventure haven; it's heady land for slacklining too, as the world record for long highlines is held near here. Make for the Colorado River for whitewater rafting and kayaking, particularly around Cataract Canyon in Canyonlands National Park, downstream from Moab, and Westwater Canyon upstream. 4X4 drivers should zip along to the White Rim Road in the Canyonlands park and to the Sand Flats Recreation Area to the resort's south, home of the Slickrock Trail. Dig into extensive local history, archaeology, palaeontology and culture at the Museum of Moab, about a mile away, and at the Moab Giants Dinosaur Park, within 10. For set photographers and celluloid connoisseurs, the Moab Museum of Film and Western Heritage is at the 19th-century Moab ranch of Red Cliffs, just to the west of the Sand Flats area.
