Sports-mad families can jump at the chance to camp at South Yorkshire’s Sheffield Tigers Rugby Union Football Club ground on the outskirts of Sheffield. Pitches are on a level meadow with views towards the Peak District National Park, and there’s plenty of space for pup tents if the kids need a bit of extra room. This leafy pop-up site is springboard to hiking, cycling or climbing expeditions in the spectacular Peak District (five minutes’ drive), but if you prefer your camping holiday with a more urban vibe, turn north and head into Sheffield city centre (20 minutes) for department stores, ambles in the Winter Garden, museums, cinemas and theatre. Back on site, you can enjoy a few pints in the rugby club’s licensed bar – where there’s a big TV screen so you can keep up with all the important sporting events – and keep everybody well fed with family favourites like pizzas and pasta from the club’s kitchen. Changing rooms and shower facilities are also available in the clubhouse, and there’s ample space for car parking too.
