For a break that blends the luxurious vibes of Versailles with the adventurous spirit of the Serengeti, have a look at the posh plots on offer at Villatent at Camping Le Petit Trianon, where spacious safari-style accommodation in the grounds of an 18th-century château ticks all the right boxes. This family-owned manor has well-tended gardens full of amusing activities, with volleyball, miniature golf, table tennis, badminton and a playground all included. Kids looking to chill out for a while also have use of a recreation room, where films, television and a wide range of games await. And as for relaxing in the open air? Put your towel down on a sun lounger by the site's outdoor pool or, for a really relaxing laze, head to the hot tub for a round of bubble therapy. The well-organised rental accommodation available here comes with a fully-equipped kitchen, but there's also a snack bar and takeaway on site as well as daily bread deliveries, meaning you can do as much or as little cooking as you want. Another big plus is the semi-covered decking area, where you can sit back and soak up the Vienne landscape and its spectacular sunsets. Getting out into all that nature is simple: in summer, the kids have wildlife-themed entertainment activities to look forward to, while cycling, walking and kayaking opportunities present themselves in abundance throughout the surrounding Poitou-Charentes countryside.

Family-friendly days out aren't hard to come by in this region, but there's one destination that's known for being unmissable. Futuroscope (30 minutes' drive), a 60-hectare theme park, is undoubtedly one of the must-sees of this part of France, with a whole array of futuristic multimedia rides and attractions to explore. And if staying here makes it easy to fast-forward through time in high-tech settings, it also opens up possibilities of stepping into the past at some of the many castles in the area. Almost all architectural tastes are catered for here, whether you're after rugged hilltop ruins like those at Château d'Angles-sur-l'Anglin or luxurious Loire abodes like Château d'Azay-le-Rideau (55 minutes). If you want to blow off steam, Ingrandes (five minutes) has a large public sports ground, as well as potential for joining scenic footpaths along the Vienne river. For pedalling, there's Chauvigny Rail Bike (40 minutes), where visitors can head out on self-powered explores along an old railway line. Finally, to work out your taste buds, head to Châtellerault (15 minutes) and its regular weekly market and try Poitou-Charentes specialities.
