  • Family-friendly site on a farm in the Peak District National Park
  • A 20-minute drive to Chatsworth House and 30 from Alton Towers
  • Within 10 minutes of the starting point for the High Peak Trail
Dawdle over to Derbyshire – and specifically to this pretty park – for a restful hol in ravishing surrounds: Mere Farm Campsite is a family-friendly place in the Peak District National Park near hiking and biking paths including the famed High Peak Trail, which starts in Dowlow, a 10-minute drive away. If you want the goods on where to go, feel free to ask the owners – they live on the farm and are brimming with top tips. Pubs are under a 10-minute drive away if you'd like to linger over lunch, with a couple past Flagg, the nearest village at a 30-minute walk. Have lunch here then mosey onwards to Bakewell for dessert: the town’s eponymous tart is but a 15-minute drive from the farm. Refrain from wolfing down another pudding or two by moving on to Chatsworth House, the massive mansion where Pride and Prejudice was filmed. Wander around the fountain in the grounds, letting the kids locate the petting zoo for hugs from horses, then head inside and expect eyes to pop at the grand interiors and plush period furniture. If small sorts are suitably behaved, treat them to a trip to Alton Towers, a 35-minute drive away, getting them sleepy enough for restful evenings – the no-noise policy between 11pm and 7am means less chance of a disturbance all round. For similarly peaceful reasons, no group bookings are allowed at this site.

Local attractions

To spend some time in a spa town, Buxton is 15 minutes’ drive from the site; head there for the opera house, pretty pavilion gardens and museums. For subterranean saunters, the two-million-year-old Poole’s Cavern is around here in Buxton Country Park (also 15 minutes away) as well. Fancy taking to the skies instead? Hot-air balloon trips can be organised 20 minutes away from the park so you can get a bird’s-eye view over the Peak District. Sticking on solid ground, lope over to Leek for Rudyard Lake and a steam train (30 minutes), or take in some history at the Norman-era Peveril Castle (also half an hour away). Town times meanwhile are top in Chesterfield with its churches, art gallery and canal (35 minutes’ drive), while the city of Sheffield’s Winter Garden glasshouse and Millennium Gallery metalwork art are within 55 minutes.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Toilets were clean. Taps were aplenty. Good views of the stars.

Disliked: The low flying commercial airliners that swooped overhead every ten minutes until 4am. The trio in the corner plot smoking week - which frequently wafted downwind to the toilet area.

Liked: We really love this campsite. The open space, the choice of where to pitch, the view and the cost. Also love the items provided in the toilets.

Disliked: Only thing I would make it down on was the toilets weren’t quite as nice as last time we visited. Our first time was a few years ago and they were lovely! So clean and warm. However, the toilet is now in a steal unit and not quite as nice.
