  • Rural and peaceful Peak District farm with animals including llamas
  • A five-minute drive to cycling on the Monsal Trail and 15 to Bakewell
  • Tideswell, Castleton, Bamford and Chatsworth all within 20 minutes
Who needs to organise a hol all the way over in South America when you can linger beside the llamas at Five Acres Farm Campsite in Derbyshire? This park full of furry, friendly animals may not be within spitting distance of treks to Macchu Picchu, but it does have Peak District paths for hikes and cycle rides on the Monsal Trail starting from a five-minute drive away. The views are also nothing short of lush: the site is surrounded by wide open fields, and walks can be had without needing to get in the car towards the nearest settlement of Wardlow and up to Hay Cop (20 minutes on foot) for a look over the local landscape. If you’d rather dig into dessert than dawdle, the tarts and puddings of countrywide renown are at Bakewell, the only market town in the Peak District and a 15-minute drive from the site. Not too stuffed to think about stocking up on supplies after sampling the wares? Food stores are here too and other urban areas worth a wander for chocolate-box houses and cutesy craft shops include Tideswell, Castleton, Bamford and Chatsworth, all within 20 minutes. Plenty other activities can be had in these towns too: Tideswell’s got the impressive St John the Baptist Church to have a gander at; Castleton’s known for its caverns where the famed Blue John stone is mined, and Bamford has three different dams to trek around. Chatsworth, meanwhile, is home to swanky stately mansion Chatsworth House – yep, that one mentioned in Pride and Prejudice and regularly voted Britain's top country house.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovey open views (brilliant sunset) Very clean site, well looked after, owner obviously making improvements all the time (hedge planting, new toilets etc) Chops your own pitch upon arrival, farmer/owner came round about 6.30pm to check people, offer fire pit rental and chat. Llamas in the field behind us, sheep and lambs all around. Simple site, no electric but freezer for ice packs. Easy very pretty walk to Litton (and pub) along Cressdale (about an hour with young kids)

Liked: I almost don’t want to share how good this campsite is to keep it as a secret gem! Facilities were clean and well presented fitting in with environment. Plenty of room on pitch with amazing views. A friendly welcome and reasonably priced supply of wood for fire pit. Will definitely visit again.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: What a beautiful place, quite even though it got quite full on the fields. The owners are lovely, very helpful and always popped round to make sure we was ok and to see if we needed anything, Our van broke we let them no if it wouldn’t start that we would have to get it recovered and they told us not to rush to get of site and if we needed there help to move it to get it recovered they would come and help us, luckily we was ok and it drove a few miles down the road in to Bakewell until it died completely and had to get it recovered haha but couldn’t fault them one bit and very greatful for there generosity. All facilities very clean and well looked after we have no faults at all, great for kids to run around and have fun my kids loved going over to see the sheep and lambs. Can hire fire pits and buy kindle and logs quite cheap they come round in the late afternoon asking if you would like any. We will be 1000% be booking again.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The camp site was amazing, loads of space so we weren’t too close to anyone else, great location a 10 min drive from Bakewell with local shops and pubs in walking distance. The campsite owners were also really nice, they’d come by each evening making sure we were okay. The facilities were also spot on, very clean, free showers.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We had a lovely stay, you are left to it but the owners are easily reachable. Coming to Clean and drop off firewood in the evening. It was quiet, beautiful scenery and a great location for hiking and getting to Castleton & Bakewell. We had lots of space and could camp any where, nice hot showers, place to wash your dishes and freeze your ice packs. Also so many cute animals and we were lucky to see all the lambs!

Disliked: Nothing we had a great time

Liked: The campsite and views were lovely. The showers and toilets were clean. My friend loved the animals, especially the Lhamas. Loads of walks from the campsite, we walked to the Monsal Trail, round to Titton went to the pub and back to the campsite, really good circular walk.

Disliked: The only thing that would have been good is a shelf by the showers for your toiletry bag as I had to place them on a wet floor.

Local attractions

If guests do decide to give pedal pushing on the 8.5-mile and traffic-free Monsal Trail a go, they can use it to reach Bakewell, stopping at Monsal Head on their merry way for views of the River Wye and the Headstone Viaduct. For leisurely walks with typically stunning Peak District views, try Mam Tor or the Ladybower Reservoir (both around 20 minutes’ drive away); hardier hikers can take on an expedition to Kinder Scout, 40 minutes' drive away, to scale the national park’s highest point. Or, if you’d rather do your sightseeing underground, boat trips through Speedwell Cavern are 20 minutes away...
