  • Adults-only bell tent by the River Roden, a 10-minute drive from Wem
  • Shrewsbury half an hour’s drive; Stoke-on-Trent 50 minutes
  • Kingsize bed; decking with hot tub and barbecue; fishing
Stay by the River certainly doesn’t stretch the truth with this name, for this adults-only site occupies a secluded spot right on the banks of the River Roden, amid the lushly green countryside of North Shropshire. And right on the banks is no exaggeration either: you can see the waters flow past as you sit on the decking of your luxury bell tent; take 10 steps (fewer, if you have long legs), and you’re literally in prime position to cast a line and fish for trout. There are no noisy children to spoil your moment of Zen here, nor any barking dogs (sorry, but your canine friend will have to go to kennels on this occasion). This is all about soaking up the peaceful ambience, listening to birdsong and having some quality time with your other half. The well-appointed tent comes with a kingsize bed (plus bed linen and towels), a log burner and thoughtful touches like bedside lighting, fresh flowers and slippers (the tent is fully carpeted). A wooden cabin on the decking houses a (composting) toilet and a hot-water shower. Then, there’s a barbecue and dining area, and a decadent two-person wood-fired hot tub. A relaxing soak under starry skies, maybe while sipping a glass of bubbly, is just the ticket, don’t you think? And if you don’t fancy using the barbecue, the market town of Wem, with its pubs and restaurants (plus supermarkets, if you need supplies) is a 10-minute drive away. Whitchurch (20 minutes) is also famed for its dining options.

Wollerton is a formal four-acre space with colourful roses. The Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery in medieval Shrewsbury (half an hour) is home to archaeological and decorative arts collections, plus minerals and fossils. Stock up on picnic food at the award-winning Shrewsbury Market Hall, and devour it at The Dingle, a garden on the banks of the River Severn. Picture yourself on the next season of ‘The Great Pottery Throwdown’ when you visit Gladstone Pottery Museum in Stoke-on-Trent (50 minutes), where the TV show is filmed. At the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery you can see exquisite ceramics, as well as the Staffordshire Hoard, a collection of Anglo-Saxon gold and silver.
