  • Well-equipped caravans at a canal junction two miles from Alrewas
  • Twycross Zoo and Drayton Manor Theme Park within a half-hour drive
  • Adventure play area, tennis court, café and indoor pool on site
What could be better than a canalside location? Perhaps a spot that’s at the junction of two major canals, with a view over the canal basin so you can watch all the boating activity on the water? That’s the exact setting of Kingfisher Holiday Park, in the Staffordshire countryside a couple of miles from the village of Alrewas and a 20-minute drive from Burton-on-Trent. Being in such a rural waterside spot means plenty of outdoor activities on hand, including fishing (free of charge to park guests) and walks through the surrounding woods, parkland and nature reserve (which has a lakeside walk and bird hide). Other places to amuse yourselves in the open air include the adventure play area, the all-weather tennis court and the crown green bowling – although there’s also an indoor swimming pool and games room (with pool table and video games) in case of less-good weather. There’s plenty of choice when it comes to eating, as well – the site has a café with indoor and outdoor seating, and there’s a pub just outside the park entrance. Nearby Alrewas has pubs, a restaurant and a takeaway, plus a supermarket for those times when you’d like to make use of the fully equipped kitchen in your caravan. As well as that kitchen, other facilities in the caravan include two bedrooms, a bathroom and a lounge area with sofas and Freeview TV. Double glazing and central heating come as standard so you can stay warm and cosy, and the modern units are all designed to have plenty of space for a comfortable family holiday.

Disliked: A little disappointed that the swimming pool wasn't open and it wasn't made clear at booking that it may be closed sadly.

Platinum 2 bedroom static caravan

Liked: Caravan gorgeous, well equipped, grounds very well kept, very secure, tennis courts and free loan of equipment, great kids play park, safe cycling with kids around site and down the canal, close to great days out e.g Drayton manor, Warwick castle.

Disliked: Lots of rules about gravel on road, lack of clothes washing facilities, blunt knives, reception rarely open and opening times not in pack, swimming pool closed over October half term. Forgot to get second fob to get in and out on arrival so tricky when we wanted to do different activities.

From the manager: Dear customer, thank you for your review albeit we feel it is somewhat out of order. Are you sure you aren't reviewing another park you have stayed at? You gave: - 3 stars for location whereas our Canalside location is generally held in high regard. 1 star for value for money but you weren't forced to book, you yourself booked online with full knowledge of the cost. 2 stars for accommodation whereas Visit England awarded us 5 stars 1 Star for facilities. We are sorry that a heated indoor pool, tennis court, bowling green, on site cafe and pub outside our entrance gate as well as fishing lake and Nature reserve weren't enough to keep you occupied. 3 stars for customer service when you were escorted to your accommodation upon arrival and afforded a 7 am checkout with personal service. 5 Stars for Cleanliness. 5 Stars for Wifi. All I can say is at least the latter two are accurate!

Platinum 2 bedroom static caravan

Liked: The site was lovely. We like to walk the canal system so this was just what was needed. We prefer to stay in caravans when we go away and the one we had was great. There is a nature reserve next to the site with a pond which is ideal for bird watchers. Would recommend this site.

Local attractions

Once you’ve explored the immediate area, there’s plenty more to keep you busy around here. If you’re after more walks, perhaps try the Peak District National Park (half an hour’s drive) or Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (20 minutes). Or for alternative activities, how about the local karting track (two minutes) and paintballing centre (five minutes) or having a go at skiing, snowboarding or tobogganing at the Tamworth SnowDome (20 minutes). Soak up some history while you’re here with an outing to 800-year-old Lichfield Cathedral (15 minutes) and a stroll through the Black Country Living Museum (50 minutes). Warwick Castle and Stratford-upon-Avon are both about an hour away if you don’t mind a slightly longer drive. Other top picks for a family day out? How about Twycross Zoo (half an hour), Cadbury World (55 minutes) or a cable car ride at Heights of Abraham (an hour)? The rides of Drayton Manor Theme Park (25 minutes) and Alton Towers (40 minutes) are always popular choices for a fun day out too.
