  • Peaceful meadow camping less than three miles from Chester city centre
  • A 10-minute drive from the Welsh border; Liverpool half an hour
  • Spacious grass pitches with easy access to the A51
Tucked away in a quiet village location just off the A51, Brickfield Lane Camping is just a hop, skip and a jump from the centre of Chester, a historic spot whose cathedral, riverside walks and zoo can all be reached in under a 10-minute drive. This site, which is in a residential area on a peaceful meadow, is set back from the A road, which has pavements and regular bus services to shuttle you to and from the city centre (there are also lots of local footpaths nearby). The site is part of the grounds of a former brickworks that have now been reclaimed by nature. The facilities here are simple, with just a water tap and portable toilets for guests. Campfires and barbecues are allowed – just follow instructions from site staff. The village of Littleton, where Brickfield Lane Camping is located, has a golf course; other amenities like pubs, shops and supermarkets can be reached within a five-minute drive. Slightly further afield, you can take day trips to North Wales (the border is roughly 10 minutes' away by car) or head over the Mersey to Liverpool (half an hour).

Local attractions

Take the time to properly explore Chester while you're here. As well as heaps of history – including the most complete set of Roman city walls in Britain, a stunning cathedral and the oldest racecourse still in use in the UK – the city is full of excellent shops in places such as the Chester Rows, a set of half-timbered galleries stretching back 700 years. The Welsh border can be reached in about ten minutes – where you head from there is up to you. Possibilities include boating on Bala Lake (an hour), taking in the eastern and northern reaches of Snowdonia National Park (about an hour), seeing the beach and castle at Conwy (an hour) or strolling through the grounds of Bodelwyddan Castle (40 minutes). Sticking to the English side of the border, you could visit art galleries, historic docks and shopping outlets in Liverpool (30 minutes), get a breath of fresh air by the sea at Wirral Country Park (30 minutes), cycle through the trees at Delamere Forest (15 minutes) or cross over to Hilbre Island (35 minutes) at low tide to see wildfowl and waders.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The field held up well as it rained there was no boggy areas. The facilities are kept to a really high standard and the host was kind and offered us to stay another night unfortunately the weather was not so great but we still made the most of it my son wants to return again. We went in May and you know what they say. Never cast a clout till May is out.

Disliked: Nothing was to dislike
