  • Small and scenic caravan site on Appleby Golf Club in Cumbria
  • A 15-minute drive to the North Pennines; 25 minutes to Lake District
  • On a moorland golf course; pubs and shops five minutes’ drive away
A small and simple site with one very big USP, Brackenber Moor Caravan Site is bang in the middle of Appleby Golf Club, just off the A66. This moorland course was designed by Open Champion Willie Fernie in 1903, and it offers challenges for all levels of player – but please note that the site is not managed by the golf club, so you’ll need to book separately if you want to play a round. Taking a break at Brackenber is as close to wild camping as you can get in a caravan; the minimal on-site facilities include mains water and a chemical toilet disposal facility but no toilets or showers. But hey, chances are you’ll either be or out and about exploring the area or teeing off on that golf course. Dogs are welcome too, but due to the particular nature of the site, with flocks of free-roaming sheep around, they'll need to be kept on leads at all times. Sitting on the Eden river, Appleby-in-Westmorland is a great place to visit any time of year, with a medieval castle and Georgian-era architecture. A nose around will turn up plenty of pubs and restaurants if you fancy a change of scenery, or handy shops for picking up supplies if you’re going down the self-catering route.

Liked: Lovely peaceful location. Best night’s sleep. Clearly advertised as basic facilities with just an elsan point, drinking water and bin but price reflected this and was worth it to stay in legit area where despite being a bit remote, we felt safe.

Disliked: Nothing

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: We visited for the entirety of the August back holiday weekend. We loved the peaceful and beautiful surroundings, it was idyllic. You get an outstanding view of the Lake District mountains. Sheep surround the caravans and you don’t really notice the golf course because your eye is drawn to the beautiful landscape of the Lake District. The access to the Lake District was excellent, despite the distance due to extremely good A-roads. It was quicker to travel in to certain parts of the lakes from this site than if we’d stayed in the lakes. The field is obviously full of sheep poo and the sheep did wake us up one morning rubbing against the caravan but they quickly scattered when I opened the door. There is a clean water tap, Great water tap, and a place to deposit your chemical toilet and get water and nothing else. This is made really clear so that was fine with us. The last two benefits are you can check in and check out at anytime so there is no rush, and there is one hard standing pitch!

Liked: Fantastic all round views, peace and quiet. Sheep and golfers for company. Walks from pitch. Able to park on hardstanding. Plenty of room, can choose where to pitch. Excellent value. All the facilities you need in a self contained van ie. water, waste and bin. Close to the town of Appleby for supplies, good range of independent shops and interesting buildings and castle

Liked: Everything! The setting (beautiful, rugged & wild), the facilities (water & a CDP is all we needed), the location (central to the Lakes, Pennines & Dales) and of course, not forgetting, the adorable sheep. We can't wait to come & stay again!

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Although site is a bit bumpy and overgrown in the farthest areas. It offers seclusion, lovely views of the hills, there's wild animals roaming freely, golfers in the morning making terrible shots! Ease of water tap and waste dump, good wifi signal coverage and a large pond for fishing. Will definitely return. Thanks to the owner 🫡
