  • Peaceful site on a working livestock farm below the Ashford Hangers
  • In the South Downs National Park, half an hour’s drive from the coast
  • Firepits available for hire; fresh sausages, bacon and eggs available
Longing to relax with some rural scenery? At the foot of the Ashford Hangers National Nature Reserve in the South Downs National Park, Ashford Farm has a rather generous helping - and yet, Portsmouth on the coast and towns such as Chichester and Winchester are around half an hour’s drive away too. Map out your way to the prime local vistas… first, the nature reserve is 45 minutes’ walk away for walks up in the woods and views from Poet’s Stone (commemorating the war poet Edward Thomas). Then, the 50-mile Shipwrights Way (half an hour’s walk) leads the way to many more countryside views. As part of a working livestock farm, among your neighbours (depending on the time of year) are cattle, sheep, pigs, free-range turkeys, geese, ducks and chickens. With some sloping sections, woodlands to the north and west and the farm down below, the grassy pitches are a scenic spot to set roots. Handily, there are firepits available to hire and you may get your mitts on seasoned logs, frozen sausages, bacon and fresh eggs fresh from the farm. Other facilities include three unisex toilets, a shower and a dishwashing area, microwave and kettle in the farmyard (hot brew, please). On the outskirts of Steep village and five minutes’ drive away from Petersfield, a market town, there’s lots in the way of tasty local food around, including two pubs in Steep (half an hour’s walk) and another two within walking distance – and supermarkets and other eateries in Petersfield (10 minutes’ drive).
