  • Family-run and dog-friendly park in a calm countryside setting
  • Peppa Pig World and Romsey town centre within 15 minutes’ drive
  • Playground, recreational fields, dog-walking area, café and tennis
Ham it up on a holiday at Hill Farm Caravan Park, a dog-friendly and family-run site a 15-minute drive from the popular Peppa Pig World at Paultons Park and less than 20 from the numerous walking trails of the New Forest. A grand spot for keeping the kids entertained when they’re not off fawning over their favourite cartoon character, this site has a playground (for ages 11 and under) with a covered sandpit, a Wendy house and a tyre swing, as well as a recreational area where teens can hang out. A dog walk leading down to the site’s woods, where four-legged friends can frolic off-lead, is set just behind here. If the sprogs (and dogs) in your life aren’t travelling with you, the park still makes a great base – it’s a top spot for touring the Test Valley (20 minutes’ drive) and Stonehenge (40 minutes) or visiting the cities of Southampton, Salisbury and Winchester (all within half an hour). Ferries set off from half an hour away if you’re off to France or the Isle of Wight. Staying local? The park’s handily placed for horse riding, walking, golfing or fly and coarse fishing breaks. Come evening, it’s a peaceful place as the no-noise policy after 11pm boosts the chances of a good night’s snooze. Head to the local pub, a 20-minute walk away, for supper and a pint just before bedding down; for breakfast and lunch, the on-site café serves up light bites and cakes in the week and does roasts on a Sunday. A shop on the grounds sells alcohol, groceries, newspapers and a small selection of caravan and camping essentials.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch (premium)

Liked: Toilets/showers, dog walk, shop.

Disliked: Complete disregard for site rules by certain connected families who made staying very unpleasant for other guests and lack of enforcement of those site rules (they are there for the benefit of all guests). For example. Shouting, swearing, multiple vehicles on site, dogs left in motorhomes and off leads etc. Very small pitches (not enough room for cars).

Liked: Enjoyed the walks around the site and the welcome and accompanied walk to your reserved space. Loved the bird life around the site

Disliked: I believe the site could provide Wi-Fi free rather than charging

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch (premium)

Liked: Good location for exploring, close to Southampton etc. Well stocked shop.

Disliked: We booked a fully serviced premium pitch and even after checking 3 times that we were being placed on the correct pitch, we were put on a serviced pitched (no grey waste-which we booked). Originally we were told to just empty our grey waste into the bushes until we said there weren't any bushes to empty into. We then had to wait a good half an hour to be given the correct pitch (which we were told we may not get as they were very busy and booked up- not sure how this would have happened as we had booked the pitch months in advance?) We did eventually get given another pitch, which we were shown on a map in reception- problem being that there are no pitch numbers on the pitches so we had to ask around to find out which one it actually was when we got there- a very poorly managed check in! We had booked to bring our teenage son who would have used the awning to sleep in- luckily he couldn't come in the end so we didn't need the awning as there wouldn't have been enough space on the pitch. The pitch was small and they're VERY close to the pitches either side (luckily we had lovely neighbours!). There was a lady hoovering EVERY MORNING for about an hour from about 8am, otherwise the site was relatively quiet. You can hear children playing loudly in the mornings as well as the pitches are so close, which we didn't mind too much as it's quite a nice sound for us, but if you don't like to hear children then don't book as it's unavoidable where there is no space between each pitch (even the ones in the next row behind are right there!). The exit barrier doesn't work, so there is no one way system. The chemical disposal near us was also out of service so we had to go to the next field to empty the toilet container. The showers leak water everywhere as they use shower curtains which if not tucked in perfectly will flood everywhere. Advertised as having underfloor heating in the showers which we didn't experience? There is no wifi (unless you pay extra for it). One of the electricity points on our posts didn't work so our neighbours had to go and borrow a long cable from reception- by all accounts they knew that it wasn't working and just stuck four people to use a post with only 3 points working anyway. I could understand if a cable had been supplied, but if they knew it wasn't working, you'd think that perhaps this would have been made clear and and extension lead supplied to reach another post to save someone having to go and ask for help. There is also a large pylon which my teenagers at the front of the caravan said they could hear buzzing all the time also- I have to say we didn't notice it at the back of the van but they could hear at the other end.

Liked: Joe was absolutely amazing called ahead of time Before the bank holiday weather warnings were out and allowed us to re-transfer our times and dates. Could not have been more friendlier kinder and reassuring. Joe was more interested in making sure we had a good stay with them Transfer was successful and a little bit of the refund went back very quickly onto my account. Could not highly recommend the customer service that I’ve had so far and I really look forward to staying in June.

Local attractions

Once the kids have cuddled Peppa Pig at Paultons Park (20 minutes' drive), flock towards other animal-themed activities nearby such as Longdown Activity Farm (15 minutes) where families gather to watch the Friesian cows being milked, groom the ponies and feed the baby goats. Kids can’t get enough of creatures? Marwell Zoo houses more than 200 rare species, from tigers and snow leopards to rhinos and hippos, and the Hawk Conservancy Trust cares for birds in its combined 22 acres of woodland and wildflower meadows. Both are around half an hour away. If urban explores are on the agenda, Romsey (15 minutes) is the nearest market town for a wander round the shops, while the promise of a peek at one of Britain’s best cathedrals might be enough to lure you over to the city of Salisbury (25 minutes).
