  • Back-to-basics site on a Hampshire farm on the edge of the New Forest
  • New Forest Lavender Gardens five minutes’ drive; Lepe Beach 35 minutes
  • Dog-friendly site; woodland walks and off-road cycle paths nearby
Time to get back to basics with a break at Wellowwood Camping, a dog-friendly site on a family-run farm a five-minute drive from the Hampshire village of West Wellow. At the site, which is easily accessed from the A36, you can drive right up to your grassy pitch, so there’ll be no lugging of heavy gear before getting settled. There are a couple of portable toilets in the field, but not much else – at least in the way of amenities. What the site does have, though, is a pretty enviable location: you are within a 10-minute drive of New Forest National Park, where there’s no shortage of family-friendly activities and attractions to keep you busy during your stay. Start the day with an exploration of the local surroundings, whether on foot or by bike (there are several off-road cycle paths in the vicinity). Bordered by centuries-old oak trees, Sherfield English (15 minutes’ walk) is a fenced-off area of wood- and wetlands popular with dog walkers, who can let their pooches off the leash. There are several equestrian centres within a 10-minute drive, or you can head to Dandy’s Ford (five minutes’ drive) for a spot of angling on three lakes stocked with carp and bream. All the while, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the local wildlife, from bats and harvest mice to ponies roaming freely within the New Forest.

Local attractions

Surround yourself in colour and heady fragrance at the New Forest Lavender Gardens (five minutes’ drive), where there’s more than just purple shrubs, with vibrant sunflowers and multicoloured dahlias. You can also stock up on plants for your own garden here, and sample delicious home-baked cakes in the pretty tea room. There are rides and attractions for all ages at Paultons Park (15 minutes), from vertiginous drop towers to gentle boat rides for toddlers. One of the popular highlights of the park is Peppa Pig World, where kids can meet some of the characters from the beloved cartoon show. With views of the Isle of Wight, just across the Solent, Lepe Beach (35 minutes) is a good spot for swimming and watersports. Pine trees shade the hiking trails in Lepe Country Park, and the surrounding coastline is dotted with remains of D-Day training exercises and World War II memorials.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Fairly quiet, simple and basic liked this for a few days. Water, toilet ,waste disposal catered for. Owner was lovely, welcoming and took the time to say farewell, given its a New venture,it has a great future to potential . Would like to revisit in a year or so and see how it's progressed. Enjoyed the kite's flying overhead, lovely to be in nature. And was fairly quiet.

Disliked: One side area was a little bit of an eye sore and the ground was extremely rugged in places for vehicles. Female toilet wasn't the nicest but took my portaloo so didn't effect me unduly.

Liked: Hard to pick out anything we liked. It was quiet.

Disliked: NOT AS ADVERTISED. The photos on this booking are misleading. This campsite is incredibly overpriced (£25 per night) the toilets are portaloos with no running water and you are essentially sleeping right next to a building site - filled up skips and machinery. I can see that the work being done is most likely to aid the site for the summer months however for right now, £25 per night is extortionate - there are no animals and no lake/water as the photos mislead you into thinking. The field is incredibly small and fenced off - you are unable to sleep next to the trees at the bottom of the field as there is no access. I wish the owners the best of luck with the site development.

From the manager: I am sorry that you have felt mislaid about the campsite but the pictures of the lake and animals are in reference to the new forest being in close proximity to our site As for the skip and machinery they are not in the camping area but in the field to undertake work on the site. As for the portaloos it was never stated that they had running water but we do have a water supply for the site for campers to use as I mentioned on your arrival. I can only apologize that you felt mislaid as you had stayed for one night I had presumed you were happy If you had contacted me i would have been more than happy to discuss any problems that you had . Liked: What a little find! This is a new campsite with fantastic owners who have big plans! The site is basic but with everything you need for a perfect stay! They have provided toilets, water, gray waste disposal and even let us raid their wood pile for a fire! We booked for one night but was enjoying ourselves so much we booked another night! I have left this site feeling so relaxed and renewed I can not wait to come back time and time again. I look forward to seeing the progress made by the owners. It was hard to believe we were so close to the city and main attractions as it felt like we were a million miles from home. The birds singing was something else, watching the wild deer graze on the land and at night the sky was fantastic for watching the shooting stars! What a fabulous place thank you for our stay!

Disliked: Nothing!
