  • Gypsy heritage accommodation and rural camping near Exeter in Devon
  • A 10-minute drive from Exeter and Dartmoor; half an hour to the beach
  • Family-orientated site with spacious pitches; shops 10 minutes' drive
Deep in Devon hill country near Exeter, Kushti Vardos is a Gypsy heritage camping experience designed to preserve the traditional Roma way of life. You’ll soon be good and relaxed at this secluded site, on a field with countryside views and plenty of wildlife round and about. This is very much a family-orientated site, where numbers are limited and the pitches are spacious to boost peaceful vibes and to ensure your whole holiday is a relaxing one. Each pitch has its own kitchenette with gas cookers, hob or oven and twin USB phone-charging sockets. Firepits (off the ground) and barbecues are also available, along with private seating areas outside each unit so you can eat while enjoying the rural vistas. Assemble your alfresco bites from the farm shop at Ide (10 minutes’ drive). Other amenities include a car park, shower block and washing-up area, while 10 gallons of fresh drinking water are delivered to every pitch daily, and replaced when the drum is empty. On site, you can meet the horses and donkeys or wander around the genuine Gypsy bow-top wagons and other Romany artefacts on display. Each unit has an authentic Gypsy heritage; as they are so precious, you’ll need to take care when staying in the wagons – well-behaved kids and kind consideration is appreciated. For this reason, no dogs are permitted on site.

Kushti Tan gypsy caravan

Liked: Excellent quality caravans / vardos Inviting and friendly staff Relaxed atmosphere Good location We travelled as a Romani couple looking to connect to our roots. While we stayed there, there was also two other families there, one also Romani and the other non-Romani. Everyone got on well and it was all very welcoming. The site is great whether you want to use it as a base to travel around the area or sit by the fire / bovvy all day. The site itself is beautiful as well. A good way to either learn about or reconnect with Romani culture. All the staff are very accommodating and atr able to tell you about the local area if you want to travel.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Kushti Vardos is by far the loveliest place I've ever stayed! It is so special, the quiet surroundings, the fields and woods, with deer coming out in the twilight or at dawn, the horses grazing peacefully just behind the fences until they've had enough and wander off. And above all: those incredibly beautiful wagons!! Owners Clarence and Sarah are so friendly and helpful, it was a great joy meeting them. Just keep in mind the facilities (2 toilets, 2 showers) are quite basic, don't expect luxurious modcons, apart from good hot water, excellent Wifi, and LED-lights and USB phone charging sockets in every wagon! We missed out on the open fire cooking, but we're definitely planning to do so next time.

Local attractions

Exeter (10 minutes’ drive) is a lovely historic city, sitting on the seafront and with free daily guided walks giving you an intro to its delights. The medieval cathedral has a spectacular Gothic facade, while mellow St Nicholas Priory was founded in 1087 and is open for tours of its undercroft and Tudor-era parlour. The Quayside is lined with lively pubs and restaurants for when you’ve had your fill of history. Rambling and cycling in Dartmoor National Park (20 minutes) is another big draw in these parts; head for Grey Wethers stone circle (40 minutes) or the dramatic cascade at Becky Falls Ancient Woodland Park (35 minutes). If you fancy sea views for a change, head to the South West Coast Path (half an hour) for challenging hiking along clifftops. Travelling with the kids? If they have behaved impeccably, reward them with a day on the thrill rides at Crealy Theme Park and Resort (20 minutes), or take toddlers to meet the animals at the Miniature Pony Centre (half an hour). For fun in the sea, there’s a quiet beach at Sandy Bay (40 minutes), or you can take long walks on the shingle at laid-back Budleigh Salterton (35 minutes).
