  • Small family-run site in the grounds of an old cider apple orchard
  • Jurassic Coast beaches and Exeter city centre within a half-hour drive
  • Pitches mown into a grass meadow; tennis court and games available
If you’re on the lookout for lovely surroundings and equally lovely views for your Devon camping break, take a look at Pithead Campsite, a small family-run site about half an hour’s drive from Exeter. Pitches here are in the grounds of an old cider apple orchard, and they’re mown into the wild grasses of a natural meadow to give you a fabulously private little corner of the countryside all to yourselves. This is a great place for family camping, as there’s plenty of safe space for kids to have a run around – but it’s just as great for a quiet couple’s break, as it’s got distant views over Dartmoor to look out at while you get a barbecue or campfire going for a chilled-out evening. There is a communal firepit or a couple of braziers/fire bowls to borrow which guests can ask to borrow, as well as firewood to buy on site. (Please note that you’ll need to keep all barbecues/fires off the ground to avoid damaging the grass.) Facilities on site include a couple of compost toilets (hand-decorated by the in-house artist, no less…), a splendid hot outdoor shower and a communal firepit and barbecue for those times when you’d like to be a bit more sociable. Alongside the field is a grass tennis court – it’s a little bumpy, so don’t go expecting Wimbledon-style standards, but it’s free to use. You can borrow racquets, balls and a croquet set, and you’re also welcome to use it for other games. There is also a communal solar-lit kitchen, which includes a sink, a small solar fridge, a gas cooker (with honesty box), cooking utensils and two USB power points. Visit the vintage marquee's tables and chairs for a covered communal area. Getting out and about is easy from here too, whether you plan to hike around Dartmoor, head down to the Jurassic Coast or explore the streets of Exeter.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: The hut was beautiful, so nicely done. In a great field and the host was very helpful too. It was so cosy with the wood burner on and the shower was fantastic! Loved being there, felt very relaxed. In a great spot too for accessing some great walks and pubs in the area.

Disliked: If it had been nicer and you were sitting outside the sound of the A30 is quite loud. Can't hear it at all though inside the hut!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We had a wonderful one-night stay for my child’s 12th birthday celebration with a few of his friends on the last weekend of the season. Fan very kindly kept the marquee up for us which was due to be taken down the next day, and this was a great wet weather provision and the perfect space for breakfast the next day. The site is very beautiful and well cared for with many apple trees. The atmosphere is lovely and there are all the facilities one needs for a camping break including a kitchen/bar area with lighting, stove and a fire pit with seating. You can buy a wheelbarrow of firewood on site. Would love to come back with several families next summer for the weekend. Big thanks 🙏

Disliked: The A30 and airport is audible at night so bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper but you can ignore it

Liked: We had a lovely stay at Pithead. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who's passing through the area and they will for sure go back if I'm there again. It is a beautiful site, the amenities make for a very easy camp and the host is really attentive and welcoming. We had a lovely evening relaxing by the firepit

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: This is the nicest campsite we have stayed at. There are beautiful orchard trees and bamboo trees giving privacy to the loos and a lovely enclosed outdoor shower. There is a communal kitchen with gas hob and small fridge, a large communal firepit, a covered outdoor communal dining area with several tables and armchairs and paths have been mowed into the grass/meadow to create pitch areas and pathways to each of them, as well as to all facilities. There are three lovely bell tents with fire pits and picnic tables as well as a lovely shepherd’s hut. There is even a grass tennis court complete with balls and high end racquets for adults and kids. The site isn’t too big or at all crowded. It was wonderful staying there.

Disliked: You can hear a main road from the site but this sort of noise helps out our children to sure. There is occasional air traffic noise but this was slain very interesting for the children and it is rare at night.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The whole place! From the location to the rustic-ness! It was soooooo peaceful and the camp kitchen and retro marquee were amazing. The fire pit was great for toasting marshmallows for luxury smors - we used double chocolate chip cookies for the biscuit bit! The kitchen was really well kitted out and we had no problem sharing it with other campers - it made it really sociable. We were more than happy to add to the honesty box for the gas. The shower was great, nice and warm and the toilets were clean and not smelly as long as people remembered to close the toilet lids! It was place that made a lot of the Jurassic coast really accessible - we would definitely stay again. Fan was amazing and so welcoming and friendly - thank you!

Disliked: nothing!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely small and welcoming campsite, good facilities including kitchen area with communal fridge. We visited the area specifically to see the beavers on the River Otter! I enjoyed not having cars next to tents as it meant the site was more peaceful (& picturesque!)

Disliked: Shower was not particularly warm. Proximity to the A30 meant loud road noise even late at night unfortunately.
