  • Spacious wild camping pitches at an Exmoor farm with sea views
  • A 10-minute drive to Lynton and Lynmouth; 15 minutes to Exmoor Zoo
  • Firepits available to borrow, with logs to buy on site
If it’s spectacular views, coastal strolls and wild camping vibes that you rate highly, head over to Berry’s Ground Lane Campsite, part of a farm within the Exmoor National Park just outside of the pretty north Devon hamlet of Martinhoe. This pretty place is half an hour's drive from Barnstaple and a 10-minute walk from the South West Coast Path, meaning the seaside strolls galore… As you might expect from such a cracking location, the views here are rather spectacular, looking out over the pristine countryside and with sea views from some pitches. You may also spot deer loitering in the neighbouring fields (and this is one of the reasons why, although dogs are allowed, they must be kept on leads while on site). Keeping these gorgeous surroundings as nature intended means that the pitches here are very much in the ‘wild camping’ style, although they do have access to composting loos. Each pitch is around half an acre in size, so there’s plenty of space to run about, play games, fly kites or just relax. Campfires are permitted too (but only in firepits, which are available to borrow free of charge) and logs are available to buy. For either of these you’ll need to drop the site a line in advance so they can sort them out for you. Loud music, however, is not permitted in order to preserve the peace of the place; you’ll be asked to take all rubbish away with you as well. There are of course heaps of excellent walks to take around here – either along the coast path or out into the countryside looking out for wild ponies (and cosy pubs). For beach time, head to Lynton and Lynmouth (10 minutes’ drive) or get your surfboard and set off to Woolacombe (half an hour).

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch (wild)

Liked: We had a beautiful stay. The view was fantastic. We had a whole field to ourself. The coast past was easily accessible accross two fields through a gate and followed the path down to the coast path. A fire pit awaited us in our return. We were able to leave our van there all day while we hiked. The sunset was incredible

Disliked: Nothing

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch (wild)

Liked: This is a really well looked after site. Toilets and showers were impeccably clean. Owner really friendly and came to say hello when we were on site. Brilliant for lone travellers on the South Weat Coastal Parh as the owner has set up an indoor area in an old horse box for people to chill and to charge your phone. Lovely break from a small tent. Had full data on this site wirh EE

From the manager: Hi Lorna, thank you for the lovely review but I think this may have been for a different campsite :) we don't have a horsebox/showers I'm afraid. We are the wild campsite on the cliffs above Heddon's Mouth and Woody Bay with the cracking sea views. I hope you enjoyed your stay with us regardless!

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch (wild)

Liked: We got a really helpful email from Katie letting us know where we were pitched and other site info. The site itself is absolutely beautiful - the sea views are incredible and it’s right on the coastal path. The compost loo was spotless and well maintained and there were plenty of water points. Absolutely huge pitches with plenty of space between us and other guests. Lovely to have a fire and have such amazing starry skies.

Liked: Stunning sea views. Beautiful wildflower field to camp in, so many butterflies and birds. Pitches were huge, fire pit was perfect. 10 minutes from the coastal path. Felt very secluded only one other couple in our field. Absolutely perfect place to camp.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch (wild)

Liked: Beautiful location - almost every pitch in the site has stunning sea views. The coast path is right next to the site and has amazingly dramatic scenery within a short walk. The toilets are very well kept and much nicer than other sites I've stayed at - they even had toilet roll which was a bonus!! Despite feeling very remote, it is actually quite easily accesible from the main roads and close to some great attractions and beaches.

Disliked: It is quite exposed on the hilltop so it was very windy at the campsite for much of our stay. Nearby beaches were more sheltered and not as windy. There is only 1 toilet cubicle per 10 or so pitches, which if the site was full means potentially 100+ people per toilet. It was quiet when we were there so not a problem, but this could be an issue in peak season. None of us could get a reliable phone signal while at the campsite - something to be aware of!

From the manager: Hi Vincent, we're really pleased you enjoyed the remoteness of the location and the sea views - it's definitely somewhere to escape, hence the lack of signal and & no Wifi provision. Occasionally it can be a little windy, but hopefully the views to the sea make up for this. We limit numbers to a maximum of 30 people per loo and check them daily, so there will never be more than this between the toilet and urinal provided, and have never found this to be a problem. Hope to see you back again and have a lovely summer!

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch (wild)

Liked: What an amazing campground if you love a wildcamping experience. The pitches are spacious and all booked slots were spread over several fields, which lead to a spreadout over several fields and everyone having their own field, which was amazing. The views from the pitch looking out over the sea and towars Wales was spectacular. The toilet was super clean and there was running drinkable water from a tap. The provided firepit resulted in cosy nights by the campfire. The quiet and clear skies were truly inspirational. The valley of rocks, woody bay and heddons mouth are reachable from the campsite itself as it has a path leading to the coastal footpath. We also met the friendly owners, thanks again for having us!

Local attractions

It’s an hour’s walk from the site to a stunning stretch on the South West Coast Path with wild goats, named the Valley of Rocks. Plus, more great seaside spots can be tracked down slightly further out… Perhaps the villages of Lynton and Lynmouth (10 minutes' drive) with their sea kayaking tours and cliff railways or beach days and boat trips to Lundy Island from Ilfracombe (half an hour). There's swimming, surfing and horse riding in Woolacombe (half an hour) too. With Exmoor Zoo (15 minutes) and Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park (20 minutes) also a short car ride away, fans of wildlife will also be in for a treat. Otherwise, climb into a Victorian railway carriage for a memorable steam train ride at The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway Company (five minutes). Watermouth Castle (25 minutes) is another historical spot, but with rides, slides and shows for kids.
