Escaping for a stay in the woods is a fine thing. And escaping for a stay by the seaside is a fine thing too. So let’s just have a think about how much of a fine thing a stay in the woods by the seaside would be… If you’d like to do rather more than think about that enticing proposition, book yourself in at Bells in the Woods at Studland, in a gorgeous chunk of Dorset woodland a couple of hundred metres from the shoreline of the Isle of Purbeck. This is the place for you, say the owners, if you enjoy peace, owls hooting and gazing at the stars… and, one might add, not having to put up tents. That’s because the smart bell tents here are not only in a splendidly secluded location on a private estate but also set up ready to move into. Each one is in its own private space with its own picnic table and awning; shared-use hammocks have been strung up in the trees, as have some cool LED lights that create a chilled-out vibe of an evening. Portaloos and showers are on site too, and if you want to make life even easier, you can book things like bed linen and baskets of wood too. Frankly you may never want to leave, but you should attempt to do so now and then – there’s fab hiking and mountain biking to be done nearby, plus trips to the famed Studland beach and Corfe Castle (both about 10 minutes’ drive away).

Local attractions

If you’re in the market for some active outdoorsy time, the Isle of Purbeck is a top choice. Around here are all sorts of options for walks (gentle strolls or uphill hikes as you wish), bike rides on cycle paths or quiet lanes, horse riding and watery pursuits like sea kayaking, snorkelling and paddleboarding (all of which can be sorted 10 minutes’ drive away). All sound a bit too much? Perhaps just pick one of the top sights along the Jurassic Coast for a wander/picnic/lazy day: Shell Bay and Studland beach are both a couple of miles away, or you might like to check out the views at Old Harry Rocks (10 minutes’ drive), Dancing Ledge (25 minutes) or Chapmans Pool (half an hour). Taking it even easier is an option too – simply head to Swanage (20 minutes) and take your seat on the Swanage Railway for a steam-powered trip to Corfe Castle (although you’ll most likely want to get out for a wander around the ruins of the castle itself once you get there…)
