  • Peaceful rural Dorset site a short walk from Eye Bridge on the Stour
  • Wimborne 20 minutes' walk away; half an hour to Bournemouth beach
  • Barbecue provided on site; village pub 10 minutes' walk away
If you like to be able to wander out of your site and find a pretty footpath – and/or one leading to a pub or a place to eat – then a Dorset break at Farrs Meadow should suit you rather well. This peaceful site is in a hillside spot surrounded by woodland, and it’s only a few minutes’ walk along a footpath to get to the banks of the River Stour, where guests can picnic, paddleboard, go fishing or venture into the water for a swim or a paddle. Set off in a different direction across the fields and as promised you’ll soon arrive at a pub in the cute village of Pamphill. There’s a fab range of beers here but it’s drinks only so if you’re after something to eat you’ll want to carry on into Wimborne (20 minutes’ walk), a market town that’s got plenty of choice for food pubs, restaurants and cafés. Alternatively you may like to hit the shops and supermarket while you’re in town and pick up supplies for some cooking back at base – there’s a shared barbecue provided, but you’re also welcome to bring your own along if you prefer. A shared fridge and freezer are on hand to keep all your provisions fresh, and there’s also a washing-up area to deal with the aftermath. If all this sounds like something you think your dog might enjoy too, there’s good news – dogs are welcome to join you on a break at Farrs Meadow.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: This campsite is a great choice if you like your camping rustic. David who owns the site was really nice and helpful too. Tents are pitched in a lovely field with nice views away from the cars, and David took our stuff up to the field in his 4x4. The facilities are very basic. Hot showers in horse boxes, long drop composting toilets, fridges, freezers and plugs for charging in an outhouse. Lots of fire pits and logs available. The site is within walking distance of the river for swimming and kayaking and one can also walk to Kingston Lacey. A great wild camping experience for the kids!

Disliked: The washing up station had no hot water. There were no washroom facilities for shaving or teeth brushing.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Great location not far from the town and very close to the river. Walk into town along the river was delightful. Was quiet on the days we were there so nice and peaceful. Warm showers worked great.

Disliked: Would benefit from running water up the top where the tents are. Compost toilets are fine but no hand washing facilities (do have anti bac dispensers). No lights in the toilets and banged my head on the way in and out as they are in horse boxes with half doors. Better access up and down the hill as a bit dodgy in the rain!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: A hidden gem in Dorset Countryside. Woods and open fields. Very warm and friendly greeting from David who showed us around the facilities. David happy to help in any way he could (including driving our gear to the top field). Lovely, picturesque campsite, close to local pub, river and even a short walk to the beach. Really pleased to have found this campsite and will definitely go again. Many thanks....

Local attractions

Wimborne is a handy central location for all sorts of days out around Dorset – perhaps a day on the beach in Bournemouth, a trip to Brownsea Island from Poole Harbour or a wildlife-spotting walk through the New Forest National Park (all about half an hour’s drive away). There are family attractions galore too – the likes of Farmer Palmer’s Farm Park (25 minutes), Adventure Wonderland (35 minutes) and the Dorset Heavy Horse Farm Park (25 minutes) are perennial favourites. Heading towards the Isle of Purbeck, The Tank Museum and Monkey World-Ape Rescue Centre (both half an hour) are also good options. A little closer to home, you can head up into the lower stretches of the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to see the Iron Age hillfort at Badbury Rings (10 minutes) or explore the National Trust’s Kingston Lacy estate (five minutes), home to a grand Italianate mansion and a Japanese garden. Wimborne (five minutes) is worth a wander too, to see the minster and the model village.
