This friendly farm site in the Angus countryside is a canny pick for travellers looking for family-friendly breaks in central Scotland. Deuchar Farm near Fern is easy to access by road and has toilet facilities, making breaks here just that little bit easier than classic wild camping. Fresh eggs are sold on the farm too – just the ticket for your morning frying pan… The surrounding area is appealing indeed, with far-reaching views over rolling farmland and the gorgeous Angus Glens to the north. The seaside towns and sandy beaches of Scotland's east coast are also easy to visit from here, with many accessible within about half an hour's drive. Closer to base, there’s a 20-acre forest adjacent to the site where dog walkers will find plenty of trails to keep their four-legged friends exercised. Need a bit of entertainment while on site? Keeping the kids busy should be easy, whatever the weather, as there are plenty of games and bits to borrow – including a large football goal, a badminton set, a rounders set, a frisbee, some dominoes and giant playing cards for damp days. The nearest sizeable town with convenience stores and a fish and chip shop is Forfar (20 minutes).

Local attractions

This is a great part of the world for outdoor pursuits. In season, salmon fishing is on hand in the nearby North and South Esk rivers (from five minutes' drive), and the area has a wealth of excellent golf courses too, including Brechin (15 minutes), Edzell (20 minutes) and the championship course at Carnoustie (40 minutes). The small medieval city of Brechin (15 minutes) is also close by, with an 11th-century cathedral, museum and country park with 70 acres of grounds, including a play area, fairy trail, garden centre and café. Also within easy reach is Glamis Castle (20 minutes), a historic country house that provides the backdrop for much of Shakespeare's Macbeth and was a childhood home of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret. Further afield, you could use this spot as a base explore the southern reaches of the Cairngorms National Park (25 minutes), to head to the coast around Montrose (30 minutes) or Lunan Bay (30 minutes) or for city day trips to Dundee and its striking V&A Museum (40 minutes).
