  • Hilltop site overlooking Rhosneigr on the coast of Anglesey
  • Wreck-diving, mountain walks and sea-fishing within a half-hour drive
  • A five-minute drive from lake fishing, shops, pubs and watersports
Want views? Want simple, spick and span facilities a few minutes’ drive from the sea, the shops, the pub and within easy access of ancient monuments, coastal walks, wildlife and watersports? You’ll want Afallon Caravan Park. This site on the Isle of Anglesey in north Wales is on a hill overlooking the seaside village of Rhosneigr, the lake of Llyn Maelog and the Irish Sea. The roomy pitches combine with the massive skies overhead to create a feeling of space and freedom; you could almost be on the prow of a ship heading out to sea... It’s a newly-built site, with top-notch toilets and plentiful hot showers. You can park up where you stay, and you’re welcome to bring your barbecues and dogs along with you. It’s a five-minute drive into Rhosneigr (or a 40-minute walk if the great outdoors has got into your bones) for shops, pubs, cafés, a surf school and the wide sandy beach. Just behind the town Llyn Maelig looks like a lagoon, but it’s a freshwater lake, full of carp and roach, bream and tench; its south bank is open to coarse fishers with day permits.

Local attractions

A 10-minute drive away, the Anglesey Circuit draws crowds to its racetrack with a packed calendar of motorsports events. If it’s thrills on water you’re seeking, head to Trearddur and Menai Bridge (15 and 20 minutes' drive) for kayaking and diving excursions to the some 1,200 wrecks off Anglesey's waters. Gentler sea trips, taking in puffin colonies and the Skerries lighthouse, leave from Trearddur and sea-fishing excursions from Holyhead (20 minutes). This is fine walking country, and those who complete the 130-mile Anglesey Coastal Path get a certificate and badge. You can still glow with pride at walking shorter sections: a cracking one leads from nearby Aberffraw (10 minutes' drive) to Four Mile Bridge and is full of wildlife spotting, picnicking and paddling opps along the way. For another combo of the same, drive half an hour to the RSPB reserve at South Stack for clifftop walks towards the lighthouse and views from the far western edge of north Wales. If it’s heights you’re after, it’s about half an hour to start walking Mynydd Tŵr, Anglesey’s highest mountain, and Snowdonia is a 40-minute drive away to access paths up 3,000-foot Tryfan. For history, medieval Beaumaris Castle half an hour away has a moat and mighty fine views over the Menai Strait; while you’re at it drop in on Beaumaris Gaol for grisly tours and tales of torture.
