  • A 15-minute drive from Sirhowy Valley Walk; 25 minutes to the Big Pit
  • Play field on site; 10 minutes' drive from Blackwood town centre
In the South Wales Valleys, things like castles, country parks, coal mines (and of course, valleys) are never too far off. Among those splendid sloping landscapes is Fferm Gelli Camping, a family-run and Welsh-themed micro campsite fab for families looking for a quiet break. This small site is part of a Welsh farm with horses, chickens, goats and a sheep. The owners live on site and they’re fans of dogs, which is why your four-legged friend is also welcome to come and stay. With a seating area, user-friendly wet room and a children’s play field, families and dog owners should feel right at home. Equipment hire is also available at the site for things like tents, firepits and airbeds. Outside of the site, though, things are just as splendid… a few minutes' walk will get you to the local Pen-Y-Fan Pond, a green space that hosts activities such as trout fishing, canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding. Blackwood town centre is just 10 minutes’ drive away for supermarkets, a cinema, leisure centre, takeaways and a golf course. If you'd also like to try horse riding, there’s an equestrian centre 10 minutes’ drive away. Of course, this location is within reach of many more cool locations, including multiple castles within 25 to 45 minutes’ drive of the site. There are lots of mountain biking trails around too, such as Tirpentwys Mountain Bike Trails 15 minutes’ drive away. Cardiff, the Welsh capital, is 45 minutes’ drive to the south and the Brecon Beacons National Park is 10 miles to the north for all things outdoorsy.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: This was the second time that we've stayed here and already booked for next year. We love this campsite. The kids are happy playing (even though there was a bouncy castle there this time.) Hoist/ owner is so welcoming and friendly. The chips in the little cafe are lovely. Toilets clean and showers were warm. We can't wait to come back.

Camping pod

Liked: Lovely cosy pod. Nice clean facilites with a decent shower. Very friendly owners and staff. Pod had all basics covered including a little kettle and mugs. Very comfy sofa bed. Was nice having the animals close by. Play area for children in the field opposite.

Disliked: No fault of the owners or site but there was a lot of wasps around our pod.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Fab find, we were blown away by the service the whole team were great and couldn't do enough for us. Free bouncy caste and a large playing field kept the little ones happy. Secure field allowed us parents to relax. Walking Pinks the Horse and petting the rabbits guinea pigs ducks and chickens were a huge hit! Donna Kayleigh and the team were amazing we can't wait till next year!

Disliked: The many trips to empty/load the car. Completely understand why but if we could just pull up to load or unload that would have been perfect! WiFi marked 1 star as there wasn't any and I couldn't leave it blank!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Quiet, small, very clean facilities, helpful staff, fire pit, cafe.

Disliked: Tents a little too close to neighbouring campers. Cold water put us off staying a second night as we'd got drenched climbing pen y fan and with 3 children were I desperate need of warm water to warm us up. No fault on campsite part, it does clearly say this in description.

Liked: Kids really enjoyed the free bouncy castle. The little animal experience the kids really enjoyed and really good price. Toilets and showers can’t fault them absolutely sparkling. Very helpful staff the one man who helped us a couple of times was so friendly and made sure that if we needed anything else to just ask. Good location not far from lots of attractions. Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely amazing!!! What a perfect place for our family. We went with 3 other parties and were put next to eachother in the field. Lots of space for our children to run around and play. Even better that the area was fenced off and secure. We made use of the firepit the 2 nights we stayed and we all sat around it toasting marshmallows. The children had use of another field directly opposite with a bouncy castle and football goals. They had so much fun. Was tricky at times carrying our gear to the car but that's what happens when you stay on a farm so we didn't mind. There was a themed night on the Saturday and food and drinks were available. We didn't stay too long there as we had plenty of food and drink in our tent. The toilets were very very clean each time we used them. Really can't wait to book and come again. Another plus was after hours, a simple txt message asking the owners for more fire wood was answer within seconds and a code was given to us to get the wood and we paid at the cafe the following morning. Thank you for letting us stay. We will we back!

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Ideal small family friendly with pitch's on the level. The camping area was gated which enable the children to run around. Liked that fire pits were allowed for the cool evening. Children enjoyed the animals onsite.

Disliked: One set of toilets did not have lighting so torch was required.

Local attractions

A castle visit is a must, but which will it be? Caerphilly Castle (25 minutes’ drive) is a medieval castle, Castell Coch (35 minutes) is from the 19th century and Cardiff Castle (45 minutes) has over 2000 years of history for you to uncover. With the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park around 20 minutes’ drive to the north, mountain hikes are always an option. Otherwise, the Sirhowy Valley Walk (around 15 minutes) is certainly spectacular. The long-distance hike has miles of walking over farms, woodlands and mountain ridges in the Valleys landscapes, beginning or ending in Newport. You may want to learn a little about the history of Welsh mining while you’re around these parts. If so, the Big Pit National Coal Museum (25 minutes) runs tours around a Welsh coal mine. Perhaps a visit to a cider farm too? Hallets Cider (15 minutes) runs cider tasting tours and food pairing sessions.
