  • Family-run site situated on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path
  • Direct access to Porthsele beach; a mile from Whitesands
  • Farm shop, coffee hut, bar and pizzas available in high season
Fancy a stay on a family-run farm… with direct access to a beach below? Make your way to Pencarnan Farm Caravan and Camping Site, a 96-acre farm overlooking Porthsele beach on the Pembrokeshire coast. The site is on the most western tip of Pembrokeshire, with views of St Georges Channel connecting the Irish and Celtic seas. You'll be in good company with a stay here: generations of the same family have been running the site since the mid-1950s, a holiday spot for guests who return year after year – some with their kids and grandkids now in tow. This place is just the ticket for outdoor adventures too, as it's set directly above Porthsele beach (with private vehicle access so you can cart all your kit along with you). The sea and bay are safe for swimming and kayaking, and there are plenty of rockpools to explore at low tide. If you haven’t got your fill of sea breeze, surfing beach Whitesands is a one-mile walk along the coastal path or, if you’re feeling adventurous, a half-mile swim or kayak from Porthsele. Sorting supplies is easy at the farm too: in the high season, a site shop is on hand with camping and food supplies, wetsuits and logs for beach fires, and a coffee hut opens every day. A bar and pizzas are also available at peak times.

Rhosson Field non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The facilities were great and really clean, staff could be seen regularly cleaning throughout the day. There's wetsuit washing and drying areas, plenty of showers and toilets plus washing up facilities. Hair dryers to use free of charge. There's a private beach a 2 minute walk away and very beautiful, which is perfect if you don't want to go to tourist spots around St.davids. Campsite was beautiful as well, with views of the sea and coast and perfect watching the sunset in the evening. There's plenty of space to have privacy but we went in mid April when it was very quiet so may be a different story in peak times. There's a field at the back if you prefer a flatter pitch but doesn't have the view, but the slant was barely noticeable to us. The location is great, a 5 minute drive into St.davids or a 40 minute walk.

Disliked: Nothing. Not great signal on Vodafone but that's not a commentary on the site.

Disliked: Muddy field got stuck. Even thought I rang day before and told if Was fine. No assistance on where to pitch for the best ground

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. As you can see from other reviews from the time you stayed with us, while the ground was wet as expected after the widely reported wettest winter ever, it was manageable. Staff were on hand to assist, and I'm sorry that wasn't your experience. Warmly, Sarah Bookings Manager

Beach Field non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Incredible views and very well maintained facilities by the reception building. Water infrastructure is limited but signs are everywhere explaining this and we didn’t feel like we had to ration at any time- just be reasonable with consumption. There were also great food and drink options right next to camp, as well as access to a small secluded beach area a short walk from the camp. The staff on site were knowledgeable and understanding and a shop sells camping essentials if needed. Extremely good value for money and a great way to experience the beauty of the Pembrokeshire coastline.

Disliked: Access to the field was a basic track and (by their own admission) it’s easy to get a heavy vehicle stuck if the campsite has experienced heavy rainfall, particularly in the beach view field which can get quite boggy. Pair of wellies and sensible pitching is easy enough to prevent this issue though.

16-amp Ramsey Island Field electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Breathtaking scenery, friendly (and helpful) team, fantastic courtyard with super vibey tunes, great pizza and a bar with roof terrace, great shower. I can't share a link, but if you're really interested in a little bit more about this place and why you should definitely stay there: search YouTube for "Adventures in Gloria (Estevan) - Wales Day 1/5" on "Dave Owen" channel. You'll also see how they helped unstick me from the mud getting onto the field (which was a lot of fun, and a rite of passage for a campervan trip!)

16-amp Rhosson Field electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Has potential. The courtyard is a nice feature although very expensive. The Easter egg hunt provided for the kids was a lovely touch and all the staff where really nice. The little beach is unbelievable and made our trip.

Disliked: The showers need an update! The wife and daughter said the girls showers were fine. But we Stayed 5 nights and I didn't have a hot shower once. Luke warm at best and mostly cold and a bit grubby. With the wet weather we got an email 2 days before arrival saying the field was boggy and we could move our dates if we wanted. No offer of a refund so we had to go as it's my only time off work and could afford another site. We got stuck as soon as we pulled in the field so the farmer pulled us to a spot. We where stuck there for the next 5 days slopping around in a quagmire ,unable to explore South Wales due to the conditions on the field making it impossible to get the van out. The farmer had to pull us over to the tap and waste in order to refill our tanks. We booked a 16a hookup but got put on a 3a which kept tripping out the whole trip. The shop was only partially stocked as it was classed as out of season but we managed to get a few bits we needed. For the rest we walked to the town.

Local attractions

This is heaven for beach buffs: Porthsele and Whitesands beaches are both within walking distance of Pencarnan. At Porthsele, take your pick from kayaking, surfing and paddleboarding from its sandy shore; if fishing's more your bag you can fish for mackerel, pollock and seabass from the beach and from certain points on the cliff around Pencarnan's land. There are also a few marked climbing spots around the cliffs on the land and some good entry points for coasteering or a coastal swim back to Porthsele beach… followed back at base with a sunset beach fire or barbecue to end the day. The famed surfing centre of Whitesands, a mile away on the coast path from Pencarnan, has a café, deckchairs and wetsuit hire, plus lifeguards in the summer months. Heading south, St Justinian’s (under a mile away along the coast path) is home to RNLI St Davids Lifeboat Station and a departure point for boat trips around, onto and beyond Ramsey Island to spy seals, seabirds, porpoises, whales, dolphins and sharks. Make time too for a trip to the tiny city of St Davids, to browse its shops and galleries and take a look at sixth-century St Davids Cathedral.
