  • Riverside family campsite an hour’s drive from Tuaran in Sabah
  • White-water rafting and Bukit Nomburungui Trail 25 minutes’ drive
  • Spectacular mountain and forest views; fishing and hiking from site
Surrounded by tropical forest, with a backdrop of mountain foothills and edged by the Sungai Mulau River, D’idiama Campsite is a peaceful, hillside family getaway. An hour’s drive from Tuaran in Sabah, it’s a spectacular and remote spot in which to escape the pressures of everyday life. The site owners are keen to keep you all entertained – no matter what the weather is doing – and have provided books, puzzles and games to borrow for family evenings around the campfire. There’s also a shared get-together space where you can do various arty courses like rock painting (colouring tools are provided), and you can join in with planting vegetables and flowers around the pitches, or learn how to make organic compost. From the pitches, you can fish and swim in the river, hike into the forest and mountain foothills (for safety reasons, please let site staff know where you are intending to go) or steer clear of all activity, put your feet up at a tree-shaded picnic table and have a gentle snooze. And the practical bit: facilities on site include a communal barbecue and firepit, drinking water, a covered kitchen with a washing-up sink, showers and parking by the pitches

Local attractions

Swim or tube in the Sungai Mulau River direct from the campsite, or up the ante with white-water adventures and make for Water Rafting Point Pukak (25 minutes’ drive, suitable for all levels of experience) on the Kiulu River. If watersports are not for you, grab a pair of stout boots and head into the mist-shrouded hills and past waterfalls on the Bukit Nomburungui Trail (25 minutes). Take the kids for a whizz down quiet forest tracks from Borneo Quad Biking (half an hour), or pack a picnic and drive up to Eko Pelancongan Masakat View (35 minutes), where there’s also a colourful ethnic market for picking up souvenirs. For a longer day out, head for Kinabalu Park, where you can follow way-marked trails in the lush Taman Botani gardens, admire the mountain scenery from the Kiau Gap View Monument and stroll up to Timpohon Gate (all roughly an hour and a half), gateway for climbs up Mount Kinabalu – one best left for the experts only.
