  • On the banks of the Zambezi river 10 minutes' drive from Katima Mulilo
  • Fishing and wildlife-spotting boat trips organised by site staff
  • Braai area and covered kitchenettes for cooking
Easy-peasy Zambezi days are the name of the game at Caprivi Houseboat Safari Lodge, a rural site right on the banks of the mighty river. How you choose best to take advantage of this prime position is up to you – maybe take a boat trip to fish for bream, catfish or tiger fish... or cruise the waters in search of critters such as crocodiles, otters and hippos. Or arm yourself with binoculars and/or a drink and settle in a select spot in the gorgeous gardens to spot the many exotic birds that pass by (sunbirds, owls, egrets and carmine bee-eaters among them) and gaze out over a stunning African sunset...? Facilities here have been kept to a minimum here to preserve the peace,, but all essentials are provided. These include a braai area for alfresco cookouts, a couple of kitchenettes for undercover catering, and a toilet block with ladies’ and gents’ showers. A wifi connection means there’s no need to feel completely cut off from the wider world (although do feel free to ignore it if that middle-of-nowhere vibe is exactly what you’ve come here in search of).

Local attractions

Organised expeditions from the site are the simplest way to see the best of your surrounds here: half day, full day and sunset cruises leave from the dock and tend to include lots of wildlife spotting opportunities, along with picnics or braais on a riverside beach. Fishing trips lead to local waters or up to 60 kilometres away depending on the best spots for the season. If local potterings have given you something of an appetite for more wildlife spotting, it's an hour and a half or so to drive to Mudumu National Park or over the border into Botswana for safaris in the Chobe National Park. Should you wish to continue your exploration of the Zambezi river, a drive of around two and a half hours will take you to its most famed sight, the spectacular Victoria Falls. Boat trips, whitewater rafting and bungee jumping are among the activities here, depending on your appetite for adrenaline...
