Gentle Annie. What a name, and what a place to have your name attached to, encircled by the Mokihinui river, the Tasman sea and the bush forests and mountain valleys of New Zealand’s South Island, 45 minutes’ drive from Westport. Gentle Annie Seaside Accommodation and Camping Ground is an elegant kind of a place (maybe Gentle Annie was an elegant kind of a lady), made up of landscaped, flower-filled gardens stretching down to the river one way and the sea the other. Great views all round then, and bags of space to stretch out and take them in... This is a well-kept site, home to what’s almost certainly New Zealand’s only eating establishment housed inside a former cowshed. Where once there was mooing and chewing, there's now snacks, cakes, drinks and meals among wittily done-up cowstalls and by a grassy play area facing the sea. The premises are open 24/7 for chilling, chatting and shelter should the weather be misbehaving. Alongside the fine fayre of The Cowshed, everyone has access to the woodfired pizza oven and with plenty of driftwood lying on the beaches, there’s nothing stopping you from whipping up Mokihinui margheritas all night long. Maybe you could bake one then beetle up to Gentle Annie Point a few minutes’ walk away for clifftop feasting, fab sunsets and dolphin watching...

Local attractions

Continuing on the path beyond the Point, a maze sculpted out of native bush winds down to a mostly deserted beach, and this 15-minute amble gives you a hint of the top walking in the locality. Short trails leave from Gentle Annie to the Mokihinui Estuary and onwards to a small but sometimes fierce waterfall. If you fancy something longer, head to Ngakawa (20 minutes’ drive) for walks and bike rides along the Charming Creek Trail, a former mining and timber-felling tramway through gorges and tunnels taking you to the mighty Mangatini Falls. For further combos of mining heritage and top scenery, the Old Ghost Road starting 10 minutes away in Seddonville leads hikers and bikers through the Glasgow Mountains past ghost towns and abandoned workings, and just outside Karamea (an hour) you can join the Heaphy Track through the Karamea National Park, taking in the honeycombed limestone of the Oparara Arches. You can try panning for gold down on the beach yourself, fish for snapper and butterfish from the shore, take surfing lessons or hire boards down in Westport (45 minutes) or visit the Cape Foulwind Seal Colony, an hour away. The Mokihinui River’s good for watery recreations, too: fish for brown trout and herring right from the site, or kayak and tube your way up or down.
