Quiet eco-friendly and wildlife haven site, 300 metres from the beach
A 15-minute drive from Amanzimtoti and 30 minutes from Durban

It's close to the beach, of course... but there's quite a bit more to South Africa's Wavecrest Holiday Resort than that (although that's pretty spectacular in itself; do see pics). This pretty place is a spacious and serene park with birdlife fluttering all around, and secure and gated with controlled access. It's only half an hour from here to Durban should you wish to peel yourself off the sands for a city day, and is 15 minutes' drive to the popular tourist resort, seaside town and South African surfing spot of Amanzimtoti. Elsewhere, the site's KwaZulu-Natal province surroundings are a hit with wildlife watchers and eco tourism; two parts of it, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A 300-metre stroll from Wavecrest, Illovo beach is wide, sandy and shark-protected, lifeguarded on weekends and during holiday seasons. Beach buffs use it to surf in the clear waters, comb the beach for finds, clamber the dunes, or just sun their relaxed selves under the South African rays. Two river mouths and rocky outcrops are within walking distance for some first-rate fishing. Facilities at Wavecrest include an scenically set outdoor pool, a play area and a games room. For picnic and barbecue supplies as well as more coastal lazing, a tea garden is just across the road, a supermarket is a block away and shopping malls are within a short drive.

Local attractions

Named after the Lovu river that has its mouth here, llovo beach is a peaceful place, away from thronging tourist crowds but with plentiful facilities for all sorts of activities or idling. It's a famed South African fishing destination too, where anglers can try to hook good-sized specimens of shad, garrick and kob among spectacular seaside scenery. This is a stellar region too for nature reserves and wildlife watching; if this is your holiday quest, start off at the Ilanda Wilds nature reserve under eight kilometres from the beach to see species including bushpigs, otters, monkeys and mongooses. The Amanzimtoti Bird Sanctuary around 10 kilometres from the beach is another recommended spot, with three hides from which to spy around 150 species, as well as a self-guided trail and a lakeside tea garden where waterfowl will – how fab – take offered food right from your hand. Going south, it's well worth the hour and a half drive to get to the Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve, where there are nature trails all around, Umzimkhulu River rafting to tackle, zipwiring and abseiling, and the Wild Gorge Swing, the highest of its type in the world with a huge jump of 165 metres off Lehr's waterfall.
