Primitive grass tent campsite (five person)

Liked: Location, area, friendly staff, shop, and the Boathouse restaurant.

Disliked: Boathouse restaurant closed Mon & Tues, this was a real shame for campers, but realised the staff need time off too.

Primitive grass tent campsite (five person)

Liked: Beautiful location- very quiet around- only nature heard. Hot shower (not always the case at campsites). Clean facilities and all around. Grass well prepared and short cut. Good price.

Disliked: Terrain is quite hilly and it was not easy to find level pitch available when we arrived. Hot water taps in sinks of shared bathrooms/utilities room could be more "user friendly" i.e.water to last for a few seconds

From the manager: Hi Natalia, Thank you for your review. I am happy to hear you enjoyed your stay here @ Cruachan. We are in quite a hilly part of the country. I have passed your comments onto our maintenance team. Hope to see you again!

Primitive grass tent campsite (five person)

Liked: The site was quiet

Disliked: Not many flat pitches and the toilets were filthy no matter what time you went. Showers were luke warm at best and very narrow which was difficult for walking disabled to manoeuvre in and although quiet only 2 toilets and 2 showers in each men’s and ladies and a fair walk to the only toilet block from the few flat pitches

From the manager: Hi There, Thank you for your review. I am sorry you did not like our site. We are rural and our site is situated on a hill so there are not many flat areas. Thanks again.

Primitive grass tent campsite (five person)

Liked: Amazing location for loch Tay and summiting peaks Clean bathrooms Lovely restaurant and access to site next door

Disliked: Maybe a sign to indicate the path to get to the lodges site I understand it’s a busy site with the merging with the site next door however not sure why management have decided it’s a good idea to clean the bathrooms and showers at 9am. Maybe a notice needs to be put up of cleaning times if that’s what will happen?

From the manager: Hi Rebecca, Thank you for your review. I am glad you enjoyed your break @ Cruachan and the area. The toilets are cleaned 3 times a day. 9am is when the wardens start. If there was an issue with them being in there they would have been happy to come back at another time. Despite this we hope we can welcome you on another occasion.

Great site for an overnight stay with lots of options for pitching.

Primitive grass tent campsite (five person)

Liked: Tent area had plenty of options of where to pitch and very reasonably priced. Meal at the boathouse was great and have a dog menu too. Dogs loved their fish, pasta and veg.

Disliked: Toilet blocks could do with being updated.

Local attractions

Starting locally, Killin Castle (five minutes' drive) is definitely a landmark to explore. While here, wander down past the pretty waters at the Falls of Dochart (five minutes) and keep an eye out for wildlife. Killin Golf Club (also five minutes) is a well-liked course with nine scenic landscaped holes to try, while just a little further away at Ben Lawers Dam (10 minutes) you can get a close-up view of one of Scotland's highest Munros. After exploring Loch Tay and the local area, it's a short enough drive to Loch Tay (20 minutes), where plenty of watersports and hiking trails are on offer. The village of Aberfoyle (an hour away) is very popular with off-road cyclists who appreciate its miles of well-maintained gravel tracks, and there's also a forest park with Go Ape, a visitor centre and a hide where beady-eyed visitors may spot red squirrels among the trees. For more heritage sights, try Castle Menzies (30 minutes), an imposing 16th-century clan seat, or Stirling Castle (an hour and 10 minutes), one of the most important and impressive historic buildings in Scotland.
