  • Back to basics farm campsite on the edge of the High Weald
  • Five minutes' drive from Herstmonceux Castle; Pevensey Bay 15 minutes
  • Two spacious fields with direct access to paths and bridleways
Heading to Herstmonceux Castle? Travel there the scenic route. You'll want to start by setting up for a stay at Comphurst Farm, a friendly farm campsite just over a mile to the north. Next, set off down the lane through peaceful woodlands, which merges into an ancient bridleway after a few minutes' walk, and watch the castle's tall turrets emerge through the leaves… Set back from busy roads about a mile from the village of Windmill Hill, Comphurst Farm is in an excellent location for exploring 1066 country, the High Weald and the East Sussex coast. This 250-acre property is family-run, home to an equestrian centre and has two spacious camping fields to choose from. Broomy is the smaller of the two and is slightly more secluded (although low-slung cars may struggle to enter and exit), while Bridletrack is open, spacious and easier to access. Comphurst Farm is a site for people happy to focus on spending time in stunning surrounds who aren't too bothered about the lack of fancy facilities. That being said, the farm does have basics like portable toilets, a supply of firewood and locally made firepits that are available to hire. This is a dog-friendly site, but please remember that there's livestock nearby and passing pedestrian traffic on neighbouring footpaths. Village amenities (including a village store, a fish and chip shop and a couple of pubs) are an easy mile's walk away in Herstmonceux. Looking for bigger supermarkets or restaurants? Hailsham (10 minutes' drive) is an easy round trip from Comphurst Farm.

Local attractions

Once you've seen the ins and outs of Herstmonceux Castle (roughly 20 minutes' walk from base), there's also the Observatory Science Centre next door, an interactive museum that hosts workshops, stargazing events and a huge astronomical telescope. Also within a mile is Brick Farm Lakes Trout Fishery, where anglers can while away a happy few hours, or falconry lessons by appointment in the castle grounds. Heading south, Pevensey Bay (15 minutes' drive) has a scenic stretch of shingle beach, bordered by the equally interesting Pevensey Levels National Nature Reserve. Next up there's Eastbourne (25 minutes), which has an impressive seascape of its own. Families looking for activities for all ages will probably end up passing through the town at some point during their stay – it's home to a miniature railway, a bevy of golf clubs, Fort Fun waterpark and Treasure Island Adventure Park. Finally, if history's the thing, you have a wealth of historic buildings like Battle Abbey (20 minutes), Michelham Priory (20 minutes) or Bodiam Castle (30 minutes) close by, plus Hastings (30 minutes) and its fascinating shipwreck museum.
