Local attractions

For exploring on two feet or two wheels, there is a waterside bush trail along the Taipo River (10 minutes’ drive) and longer routes from Lake Brunner (15 minutes) leading up Mount French (25 minutes). More serious trails are found in the Bald Range (five minutes), and there are challenging multi-day hikes around Mount Alexander (10 minutes) in the Kaimata Range. Mix in some history with your exploring and head for the 1860s Quartz Crushing Mine Site (15 minutes), or drive the dramatic alpine Arthur’s Pass (half an hour) to see the bizarre rock formations at Kura Tāwhiti/Castle Hill Conservation Area (an hour and 10 minutes), sacred to local indigenous peoples. Looking for adrenaline-pumping thrills? Head for the West Coast Treetop Walk and Café (an hour) to see the rainforest canopy spread out below and views of Lake Mahinapua. Up the activity levels and go skiing and boarding in Arthur’s Pass National Park (15 minutes) or swoosh the powder bowls in Craigieburn Valley Ski Area (an hour and 15 minutes). Novices can find their ski legs at snow school in Mount Cheeseman Ski Area (an hour and a half), with mellow runs on the lower slopes.
