Local attractions

York’s an unmissable destination on any trip to the north of England: the city’s attractions include age-old structures like the minster as well as the new-fangled Jorvik Viking Centre that delves into the region’s Norse roots. For shopping, you can browse for bargains at boutiques set inside the old timber-framed buildings of The Shambles, an old street dating back to the 14th century. Trainspotters may want to shunt themselves over to the National Railway Museum at York, a collection of carriages – including some used by Queen Victoria – that visitors can have a nosey at free of charge. Chug along to Kirkham Abbey afterwards (40 minutes) for a wander around this riverside priory in the Derwent valley near the Yorkshire Wolds then have more alfresco explores at the open-air Yorkshire Sculpture Park gallery with work by British and international artists like Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth.
