Primitive grass campsite

Liked: This is a really lovely clean campsite, there is river access and excellent facilities. Cars are only allowed on the site for unloading and loading your tent this keeps the site safer and quieter. Really friendly and helpful staff. I will be sure to return.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Immaculate campsite with clean and well maintained facilities, big and level pitches, friendly staff, good scenery, and stress-free parking and check-in. Great value for money.

Disliked: The pitch-up website says that the campsite doesn't permit fires, but we saw people with off-the-ground fire pits. If we had known it was allowed, we would have bought one.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Well spaced out grass pitches with electric hookups. After unloading and pitching, all cars are parked in the carpark and not by the tents which made the site feel better. The showers, sinks and toilets were very clean and worked well. There was plenty for the kids to entertain themselves (9yrs and 10yrs). They played with the other kids on and around the park. Some of the other children on the campsite played football. The site locks its gates to vehicles at around 7-8pm so the site felt quite secure. We chose this site due to its proximity to thorpe park (12 minutes) and legoland (35 mins). We liked the site and will definitely use it again. It would have got 5 stars but the planes flying overhead every 30 minutes or so up to 11pm at night kinda spoilt it a bit when we were trying to sleep. I suppose if we used ear plugs then this may have prevented this problem. We didn't stay on the site during the daytime as we went to the theme parks but each evening the kids played out with the other kids and it was nice seeing them actually playing outside rather than glued to their screens.

Disliked: Although the site is lovely it is under the flight path of heathrow and there were alot of planes flying over during the day and evening which were a bit noisy. During the night some loud vehicles went along the road which runs along the river outside the campsite (not a busy road) it was either a motorbike or a car with a loud exhaust which woke me up. Both these things were outside of the control of the site operators. Everything else was as expected.

Local attractions

In the mood for an adrenaline rush? There are thrills galore at Thorpe Park (10 minutes’ drive), including the UK’s fastest roller coaster, and all manner of shows, rides and animal attractions over at Chessington World of Adventures (half an hour). Completing a trio of excellent days out for the kids is Legoland Windsor (half an hour), which has lots of colourful attractions for youngsters. For a more grown-up day out, you may like to try the likes of Henry VIII’s former home at Hampton Court Palace (20 minutes) or Windsor Castle (25 minutes), which has been home to 40 monarchs. Sporting sorts might also like to look out for events at Ascot Racecourse or Twickenham Stadium (both 25 minutes). You don’t have to go that far for a day out though – you could simply set off for a walk or bike ride along the Thames Path, or sign up for one of the boat tours available nearby. Paddleboards and kayaks can be hired locally as well, for more watery pursuits.
