  • Quiet, dog-friendly site in a rural village nine miles from Bude
  • A 25-minute drive to Bude’s beaches; half an hour to Roadford Lake
  • Nature, river and dog walks locally; a short drive to pubs and shops
Weighing up the idea of a surf break with a countryside getaway? Have it both ways at Chillsworthy, a quiet, dog-friendly site in a rural village nine miles from Bude. Being 25 minutes’ drive from Bude beaches such as Summerleaze Beach and Crooklets Beach means that those seeking sand and surf can get their fill without missing out on all the walks in the countryside. What else might you get up to? Well, watersports of course, whether on the coast or at Roadford Lake half an hour’s drive away. There are nature trails and river walks locally, as well as plenty of places to take your dog for their precious walkies (on the site, they should be kept on a lead or under the owner’s control at all times). There’s also a horse-riding school 10 minutes’ drive away. It’s a short drive to get to the local pubs and shops. The closest pubs are clustered in the market town of Holsworthy, which is known for being quite the foodie spot. There are, of course, shops there too if you need to pick up some nibbles. Set back from the road, the pitches at Chilsworthy are private, quiet and safe for the kids to play games and get up to their usual antics. The grassland is marked out with a border, so there’s easy access for vehicles from the road.

Local attractions

Bude (20 minutes’ drive) is known as a surf destination, but that’s not all there is to do there. Go crabbing at Crooklets Beach or hire out a beach hut at Summerleaze Beach. When you’re done searching for shelled critters or snoozing on the sand, there are rowing boats or pedalos for hire on the Bude canal and a canalside heritage centre with exhibitions on Bude’s geology. Elsewhere on the coast, the National Trust’s Sandymouth Bay Beach (25 minutes) is flanked by cliffs with gorgeous coastal walks and Crackington Haven (35 minutes) is yet another attractive stretch of gold sand with rockpools galore. Inland, the activities continue full steam at Roadford Lake (half an hour), there are canoes, paddleboards and sailing boats for hire, as well as activities such as archery and high ropes courses. Searching for a special picnic spot too? If the clifftops don’t quite take your fancy, the National Trust’s Dunsland (20 minutes) has parklands belonging to a manor house (and there’s lots of wildlife to spy on).
