  • Communal barn with games and campfire; shops nearby
Rummaging around for a dog-friendly base that’s wild and peaceful? Seven miles from the edge of Snowdonia National Park, a warm Welsh welcome awaits at Cae Lal, a family-run site 10 minutes’ drive from Anglesey and 20 from Zip World Penrhyn Quarry. The field is packed with wildlife and character – think birds calling, frogs and butterflies doing their thing and the occasional hare jumping… This marvellously marshy landscape has the national park as its backdrop. Pitches are mown in a circular shape and there’s ample space between each pitch, meaning that there’s plenty of space and privacy. Another big bonus is that well-behaved dogs are welcome to come and stay, as long as they’re kept on a lead. You might walk away with a new friend or two too (not just of the furry kind). The site has a communal modern barn area, which is insulated and filled with games, books, electrical sockets and sofas so all can chill out and mingle. On dry evenings, a bonfire is lit outside the barn just in time for sunset. There’s also a gorgeous woodland near the barn with dreamy stone walls, steps and paths. Got the kids with you? They might want to play using the site’s natural resources: den-building or making hedgehog houses and bug hotels, perhaps? This site is also well-located for family bike rides. If you want to source some snacks for the journey, there’s a supermarket five minutes’ drive from the site. The facilities on site include clean, well-designed composting toilets and flushing toilets, a washing-up area and stylish showers that have been stocked with locally made eco-friendly products.

Liked: Fabulous little find. Personal, quiet, cool and rustic. We love our stay there and will definitely be back. Teenage boys didn't quite get used to the compost toilets though! All part of life's experiences! See you again soon Melanie, Dom Finley and Harley

Meadow primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The site is well thought out with mowed large pitches reached by mowed paths, the rest of the site is allowed to grow naturally. Your car has to be parked on the car park and you must transport your kit to your pitch by wheelbarrow, depending on how much kit you have its a bit of a workout!!!The showers are amazing, hot and clean with eco friendly shampoo provided. There are sinks too but no hot water again with eco friendly soap provided. We didn't like the compost toilets but there are two traditional toilets as well. There are two sinks for washing up with lots of hot water and eco friendly washing up liquid is provided. There is a shed with fridge/freezer, kettle, toaster, microwave and tea and coffee. There are comfy settees, board games and snooker in there too and the all important sockets for charging our phones! Bethan and Adam were welcoming and showed us around as we arrived, Doti the dog is so friendly too checking in on everyone! The site is in a peaceful location down narrow lanes with room for only one car which I found nerve racking as I'm not very good at reversing! Then at the bottom of the lane you have everything you could possibly need, Tesco, KFC, Starbucks, Dominoes, B&Q, Aldi, Range, Iceland, Farm foods, McDonald's, Dunhelm Mill, Home Bargains!!! The site is well placed for visiting the surrounding area, Llanberis for Snowden was about 20 minutes, Caernarfon was 20 minutes, Anglesey was only 10 minutes. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay being away from it all but everything on our doorstep if needed, we would love to return.

Disliked: Inconsiderate people!! We were woken at 4.30am on our last night by the group of 6/7 individuals who'd arrived next to us, talking loudly, using their stove and getting themselves organised for their trip up Snowden, thankfully they left at 5.30 and peace was restored. When you are paying £40 a night disturbed sleep isn't really acceptable, not the sites fault, although there were plenty of vacant pitches so not sure why they would be allocated pitches adjacent to a more mature couple seeking peace and quiet. It was apparent from talking to others campers we weren't the only ones disturbed either.

From the manager: Thank you, Wendy, for taking the time to write such a thorough review. It was a pleasure meeting both of you. Firstly, I’d like to address the issue with the basins not having hot water. Normally, our basins do provide hot water, and I sincerely apologise if this was not the case during your stay. This was a plumbing issue we were unaware of at the time. We always strive to ensure our guests are satisfied and encourage them to inform us of any issues. The hot water issue in the basins has now been resolved. Additionally, we remind all guests of our quiet times policy multiple times, from the booking process through to check-in. We had no indication that the family camping next to you would be noisy during their early morning preparations for Snowdon. I sympathise with you for the disturbance on your last night and am very sorry this occurred. Hoping to see you both again, Bethan

Meadow primitive grass tent campsite (large)

Liked: Big camp fire, showers spacious and lovely and warm with soaps and shampoo provided. Nice and quiet. Tranquil. Able to rent a camp fire for your pitch. Loved the view with surrounding mountains. Loved Dottie the dog. If you needed it there is access to a fridge in the games room which is also great if you have children to entertain or it's raining.

Disliked: Not keen on the toilets. They are very clean and modern with disinfecting spray and plenty of loo roll provided but as they are compost toilets they did have an unpleasant odour in between the sawdusting. You have to use wheelbarrows to get to your pitch which can be a faff but as there is a little Marsh between the car park and the meadow this is a great tool to be provided with from the owner. None of which is enough to put me off. The overall stay was amazing and will return again.

Meadow primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The meadow field is beautiful, plenty of space between pitches. The bathroom, shower area is the nicest we have seen at a campsite. The shed with the toys and games for kids is perfect when the weather is not so great. Bonus that there are fridge freezers, kitchen appliances also. Kids absolutely loved Dotty the dog.

Liked: Friendly owner, good facilities, decorated with taste and style, there's all you need there. Close to must see places

Disliked: The fact that you have to leave your car at the car park and move all your stuff to the campsite but it's just because of the type of camping. There are wheelbarrow to help you move the stuff though

Liked: I was most impressed with Car Lal facilities. The showers had eco champú, conditioner and gel provided. All the installations were very nicely designed. It was like walking in a enchanted forest! I'll definitely come back! The owner and workers are super friendly! Location is great, 25min to the mountains and just few minutes to the sea.

Local attractions

Kick off your escape with a bit of adrenaline, which is exactly what you get on the 500-foot zipwire that hangs over the slate quarry at Zip World Penrhyn Quarry (20 minutes’ drive). The climbing centre in Caernarfon (15 minutes) will add to the heights-themed activities, except you might first get carried away nosing around the town’s 13th-century castle. Slate was once a booming industry around here, which is something you’ll get to know at the National Slate Museum in Llanberis (15 minutes). Llanberis and the former slate quarrying village of Bethesda (15 minutes) are both gateways into the national park… but first, Llanberis has heritage trails for you to tackle before the big national park paths (or a steam train if you don’t fancy walking just yet). When it comes to gorgeous coastal spots, first on your list should be Bangor (10 minutes’ drive), with its pleasure pier, and Anglesey’s beaches and coastal paths (10 minutes).
