Fancy a relaxed sojourn near a gorgeous coastal village in Cornwall – and one with the option of surfing? In that case, it’s time to consider a stay at Treza Camping, an easygoing no-frills spot on the Lizard Peninsula that’s 15 minutes’ walk from both the pretty fishing harbour at Porthleven and its renowned surfing beach. Life on this site, on a working farm overlooking the sea, is indeed pretty chilled. There are no set pitches, so pick your favourite spot on arrival and claim it as your own. Bring torches and batteries as there’s no electricity on the camping field, but low-key facilities do include showers and toilets as well as washing-up sinks. This is a dog-friendly site, and your canine chums can join long family walks on Loe Bar beach (20 minutes’ drive) or hike segments of the South West Coast Path (15 minutes’ walk). And of course, with Porthleven beach being so close, this is a handy spot for families with kids keen to make sandcastles on the shoreline or splash around in the waves. Pick up supplies for the barbecue from Porthleven village (have a nose around the cute harbour, lined with cafés, while you’re there), or abandon the idea of cooking altogether and head down to a harbourside pub for fresh seafood suppers. And finally, one rule for time back on site: this is a peaceful rural area and no loud music is allowed, so please make sure the amplifier stays at home.

喜欢: The view. The town. The central location for visiting the area. The staff are present regularly, pleasant to chat with and attentive. You can here the waves crashing on the beach down in the town when it's high tide. A helpful tide indicator.

不喜欢: The hot water is only tepid. The washing up area is uncovered. The site is very windy.

喜欢: My landlady gave me the most wonderful welcome. Tea, chair, nice conversation. And to top it all, because it was about to rain in the night, she offered me her office to sleep in with full use of everything that was there. I slept very well. The next morning she took me in her jeep down to where the Path began, saving me kilometers on hard road. The campsite was high up with a wonderful view. Good shower and toilet facilities, and a wonderful sunset. The best!

喜欢: It was so spacious and clean. The grass was lovely to pitch up on with no stones when I put my pegs in. Toilets were cleaned every day and Wendy always made sure everything was okay. The views were absolutely stunning. She helped me personally when my tent fell down. She was the first to be there and sort it all out for me helping me with somewhere to stay etc etc. Couldn't thank her enough for her help.

喜欢: Large space, lovely and quiet, brilliant stars on a clear night. Good clean facilities. Fire pits a welcome addition. Out of town but walkable after a beer by the harbour. Walked coast path and got the bus back to Porthleven - what an experience on a double decker down some little lanes.

Surfers, staying at Treza Camping gets you close to Porthleven beach (15 minutes’ walk) with consistent waves and recommended for experts. Novices can catch gentle waves at Poldhu beach (20 minutes’ drive), while Praa Sands (10 minutes) is another popular surfing destination. Non-surfers can take a dip off sandy Loe Bar (20 minutes), with a choice of sea on one side and a freshwater lake on the other. As well as being popular with outdoors fiends, this part of Cornwall packs a cultural punch: departure point for tours to the historic castle and gardens at St Michael’s Mount, pretty seaside Marazion (15 minutes) is also filled with indie art galleries and craft shops, while St Ives (half an hour) on the north coast is home to the famous Tate St Ives gallery. At the western end of the county is Porthcurno (45 minutes), host of musicals and plays at the open-air Minack Theatre (50 minutes). And of course kids get a look in too, with both thrill rides and gentle carousels at Flambards Theme Park (10 minutes), or the chance to visit cute rescue seals at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary (20 minutes).
