Calling all walkers, cyclists, birdwatchers, beachgoers… there's a lovely base for all of you at Ynysymaengwyn Caravan and Camping Park, in the grounds of a ruined old manor house in rural Gwynedd, just over a mile from Tywyn and its beach. This is a peaceful spot indeed for a break, as the pitches are surrounded by woodland where you can head out for walks (with your dog by your side if you’ve brought them along for the ride) or follow the orienteering course for a bit more of a challenge. There's also an adventure playground to keep the kids busy, plus access to the Dysynni river at the bottom of the site for anglers to fish for salmon and trout. This is a park that likes to keep things simple and relaxed rather than providing lots of entertainment, but it’s got all the essential facilities sorted including a launderette, an Elsan point and toilets and showers with accessible facilities. The location of the park is at the southern tip of the Snowdonia National Park and very close to the coast, so there’s no shortage of things to do – whether you’d like hardcore hiking or something rather more gentle. And you shouldn’t go hungry either, as Tywyn has a good collection of places to eat including cafés, chip shops, takeaways and restaurants. The town also has a supermarket and bakery if you’d rather sort your own meals back at base or pick up picnic bits.

喜欢: The facilities were modern and clean. The sites owners were friendly and welcoming. The woodland walk onsite was lovely to take the dogs too. The beach was 6 minutes by car. Lovely site.

不喜欢: didn't stay the fourth night. Two campers were running round at 7am screaming abuse at each other. Ruined my stay. Booked another site

喜欢: A well maintained site with spacious level pitches. Toilet and shower block was lovely and clean and very warm. Surroundings were beautiful with a lovely woodland walk and just a mile from Tywyn. Very good WiFi.

不喜欢: Rooks were quite noisy but had young in the nests so should not be so noisy at other times of the year.

喜欢: We liked everything regarding our stay. Check in was nice and easy at reception, we could pitch up anywhere within reason, there was a pizza van on site which is a lovely idea. Hot showers in a heated toilet/shower block which are regularly cleaned and maintained. Couldn't have asked for more, would definitely return.

As well as being your nearest source of food, Tywyn’s a great little seaside town with a sandy beach, miniature golf, pitch and putt and tennis courts. It’s also the starting point for the Talyllyn Railway, which runs into the countryside for a scenic ride – a particularly nice way to do it is to ride to Dolgoch and walk to its waterfall before a cuppa in the tea rooms. Walkers may like to set out on the Wales Coast Path or head inland for a wander along the shores of Tal-y-llyn lake (15 minutes’ drive), scramble up the slopes of Penygader (20 minutes) or head to the walking hub of Dolgellau (half an hour) to explore the trails around there. Mountain bikers, meanwhile, will no doubt want to tackle the trails of Coed-y-Brenin (45 minutes) while birdwatchers learn about the residents of Dyfi Osprey Project (half an hour). Once you’ve spent some time on the sands of Tywyn, head a little further along the coast to explore the dunes of Ynyslas Nature Reserve and see the petrified forest at Borth (both 45 minutes).
