La Ferme de l'Autruche Drômoise

Livron-sur-Drôme (10 minutes' drive) is a low-key spot near the confluence between the Drôme and Rhône rivers. Head here for local markets (three times a week) or arrange a tasting session at Château La Rolière vineyard. Also on the Drôme, the small town of Crest (20 minutes) is recommended for its medieval tower, winding streets and stunning riverside walks. Not in a hurry? Stop off to take in the views at any one of the several nature reserves along the river as you wend your way back to base. When you're ready to hit the Rhône, take yourself to the well-maintained small city of Valence (20 minutes), home to an 11th-century cathedral, a marvellous medieval château, canals, a rose garden and an archeology museum. To the south, meanwhile, Montélimar (40 minutes) has a hilltop fortress, an impressive aviation museum and is well-known throughout France and beyond for its nougat production. Once you've ticked off some of the must-sees above, the choice is yours: will it be canoeing in Aouste-sur-Sye (25 minutes), treetop adventures at Accroforest Peyrins (45 minutes) or a trip to Ardèche to see the Cuves du Duzon waterfall (50 minutes)?
