Longing for some peace and quiet on your camping holiday? You’ll certainly get that at Ouseburn Woods, a North Yorkshire nearly wild campsite set in woodland and with very little to disturb you at all, apart from birdsong and the rustle of leaves in the trees. This little gem of a place hidden among trees and wildflower meadows is a space for getting back to nature, cooking on an open fire and chilling in the open air. It’s on the outskirts of the pretty village of Little Ouseburn, and is surrounded by countryside criss-crossed with walking and cycling trails. Please just bear in mind that this is nearly wild camping, with amenities restricted to a spotless, well-designed wooden loo. There are no showers on site, and with no electricity and car parking in a designated area away from the pitches, you’re advised to take a reliable torch to find your way around the site after dark. If you should feel like a change of scenery, there are good foodie pubs in the surrounding villages of Great Ouseburn (five minutes’ drive), Marton-cum-Grafton (10 minutes) and Arkendale (15 minutes), while the lively dining scene of Harrogate is only 35 minutes away by car.

Parcel·la de terra i gespa sense electricitat per a tenda de campanya (6 places)

Em va agradar: Back to nature feel. Very basic but pretty! We pitched a large 6 man tent with living area and had lots of space. Because the ground was wet I was helped to find the best spot. Fortunately nobody was staying in the yurt. I didn’t realise there were yurts. They look great! We would hire one out next time instead of pitching a tent. It’s close to local towns like knarsborough and Harrogate yet feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere when you’re on site. Surrounded with trees and wildlife. Friendly owners who were happy to help. Weirdly we loved the novelty of a compost toilet (Wasn’t smelly at all) The area was big enough for the kids to play games and we had fires at night. There’s a row of swinging ropes and a trampoline which unfortunately had a broken pole but still bounced.! Some stick dens would look brill in there!! Having no wifi!!! Got to see my kids being kids for once! We went for a walk towards beningbrough, it’s a lovely area. There’s a church Anne Brontë painted when she stayed there. And the river Ouse starts close by. My kids found this interesting and again found entertainment at falling in the water. We had such a lovely weekend despite the mud! Will be back. Thank you and good luck with the venture !

No em va agradar: Sadly the ground was very boggy but nobody can control the weather. Bring boots unlike me who forgot them!! Such thing as bad weather only bad clothing. Could maybe use some more rubber matting or stone paths around the play area and toilet area as sinking in mud when you’re bursting is no fun. The toilet light and sink is solar powered so once the charge went there’s no light or hand washing But we had torches and water to wash in the tent. And because there are so many trees around. Maybe the solar panel doesn’t get to charge quite enough?. Also a lock on the bathroom door would be great. Because it wasn’t busy It wasn’t a problem but I can imagine it would be if it was. A shower would be a really really really great addition but off grid is off grid.

History abounds in this gorgeous corner of North Yorkshire. Visit York (40 minutes’ drive) to climb the tower of the Gothic-era minster or walk around the largely medieval city walls. Take a self-guided tour of the peaceful ruins of Fountains Abbey (half an hour), and see great art displays in National Trust-owned Beningbrough Hall (20 minutes). If kids are with you and you need an antidote to all the culture, head for the adrenaline rides at Lightwater Valley Family Adventure Park (half an hour), watch raptor flying displays at York Bird of Prey Centre (20 minutes) or visit the zoo at Flamingo Land Resort (50 minutes), which also has a good line in hard-core thrill rides. When you’d prefer to explore the area on foot, there are easy strolls alongside the River Ure from Boroughbridge (10 minutes), and wildflower meadows as well as a rich birdlife at Staveley Nature Reserve (15 minutes). Keen anglers have the choice of three fisheries within 15 minutes’ drive, and you can play golf at Ripon (20 minutes).
