Dreaming of long, lazy days on the beach? You’ll be among like-minded company at Dalmatia seafront site Odmoree Camping, just outside the little village of Rtina and 25 minutes’ drive from Zadar. Stays at this small, friendly site are so close to the coast that you barely need to stop snoring to get to the sands and the sea – sleepwalk over to the beach first thing for a watery wake-up call if you like, or wait till dusk and meander out for a moonlight swim. Settle on the beach in between swims and you’ll have a cracking view over the neighbouring island of Pag to admire while you soak up the rays. Turn around and there’s a vista of the Velebit mountains to whet your appetite for walks in some of Croatia’s cracking national parks. The team on site pride themselves on being the kind of place you can happily wander about barefoot, but it’s worth bringing shoes along for outings to the mountains, to Lake Vrana, or to the Paklenica and Plitvice Lakes national parks, all of which are easily doable for day trips. Sailing, diving and kayaking are all nearby if you really can’t contemplate getting your boots on. Feel free to kick off your shoes at will back on site though – there’s plenty of soft grass to pad about on, and it’s not terribly far to wander from beach to pool to bar anyway.

For those that do feel the urge to get boots on and go wandering, there are several fine options within easy reach: Paklenica is the closest of the national parks at half an hour’s drive, but it’s not too far to get to Lake Vrana (45 minutes), the waterfalls of Krka National Park (50 minutes) or the famed Plitvice Lakes (an hour and 20 minutes). If you’re up for scaling some of Croatia’s tallest peaks, it’ll take you around an hour and 20 minutes to drive to the Velebit mountains. The national parks aren’t just mainland-based: the Kornati Islands have had that status bestowed on them too, in recognition of their immense gorgeousness. Boat trips to take in some of the finest vistas leave from the harbour in Zadar (25 minutes), as do diving trips to see what lies beneath the surface of those turquoise waters. Also around Zadar are activity centres that can sort you with days of horse riding, sailing and sea kayaking, and an adventure park with high ropes courses and ziplines. For rafting outings, you’re best zooming up to Zrmanja (50 minutes).
