Rush to Camping La Rochade in Aquitaine's Gironde department if your needs are for a peaceful holiday but on a campsite with heaps to do: hold on to your chapeau, for the range of options and the facilities here should sort even the keenest camping types. Ready? Here goes… La Rochade has a sandy beach for starters, a mere few steps away from the site snack bar with roomy terrace, open in July and August and serving ice cream, cold drinks and a snack menu including pizzas, salads, chips and takeaway. The beach is next to the Rochade bathing pond where you can hire pedalos and kayaks to take onto the water. Here goes again: guests will also find a playground and a bouncy castle on this well-equipped campsite, along with a pétanque court, a volleyball court and mini golf. Small sorts can tackle the giant chess, pool or ping pong, while all sizes can pick up board games or books in reception if they fancy a quieter vibe. Sports tournaments, dance nights, quizzes, shows and – mon Dieu – free visits to the local wine cellars are all organised by the team in high season. And here goes for the amenities: the site has a coin-operated tumble dryer and washing machine, free wifi in reception and modern loo and shower blocks. The small grocery shop sells essential items and freshly baked bread can be ordered every day. A major supermarket is five minutes' drive away from the site.

As with the site facilities and activities, the range of things to see and do around Camping La Rochade should sort even the keenest traveller types: ask at reception if you want some help in organising your days out. Top picks in the surrounding area include the village of Naujac-sur-Mer just 1.2 kilometres away, for beachy days, coastal path walks and a spot of sea fishing. Other nearby coastal settlements are at Soulac-sur-Mer with the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Notre-Dame-de-la-Fin-des-Terres Basilica; Le Verdon-sur-Mer with the Cordouan lighthouse, and Lacanau, a top spot for surfing. The capital of the Médoc wine growing commune Pauillac is a short drive away (this is good stuff) and a little further afield are the architecture, museums, shops, restaurants and cafés of first-rate Bordeaux. Nature spotters and hikers should have a day out in the Landes de Gascogne Regional Natural Park, with its bird sanctuary on Arcachon Bay.
